Ardbeg is a whiskey distillery on the south shore of the island of Islay ( Scotland ) near Port Ellen , currently owned by Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton .
history
The origins of the distillery go back to 1794. At that time Ardbeg was operated by black markers and smugglers until they had to give up production in the illegality after a raid by the customs authorities . The legal distillery was founded, probably in 1815, by John Macdougall under the name Ardbeg Distillery (from Scottish Gaelic An Àird Bheag - The Little Hill). Operation has been documented since 1817. The company was family-owned until 1959.
In 1977 Ardbeg was completely taken over by Hiram Walker (Allied Lyons) and operated by Allied Distillers . After a period of shutdown (from March 1981), Ardbeg was then reopened in November 1989, but now without its own malt house with three malt kilns. After another closure in July 1996, Ardbeg finally went to McDonald & Muir ( Glenmorangie , Glen Moray ) in February 1997 and has been in operation again since June 25 of the same year. In October 2004, Glenmorangie plc (successor to McDonald & Muir ) and thus also Ardbeg was sold to Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton (LVMH).
Unlike most distilleries that house a cat, the distillery has a distillery dog : Shortie , a Jack Russell Terrier , who is now "retired".
production
The water in the still comes from Loch Arinambeast and Loch Uigeadail . That, from the used Port Ellen - Malthouse originating malt has a phenol content of 56.2 ppm . Ardbeg has a mash tun ( mash tun ) of 4.5 tons made of stainless steel and six fermentation tanks ( wash backs ), three made of larch - and three made of Douglas fir , each with a capacity of 23,500 liters. Distillation takes place with steam-heated inner pans in an 18,279 liter wash still - which is filled with only 11,775 liters - and a 16,957 liter spirit still - which is filled with only 13,660 liters. The output is around 1,400,000 liters per year.
Typical of the whiskey is the high proportion of smoke and peat , but also a very clear note that is reminiscent of medicine, due to the comparatively high phenol content. There is also a citrus note characteristic of Ardbeg. The whiskey is a sought-after collector's item among enthusiasts. Although new whiskey has been produced continuously since the reopening, the older vintages in particular are in great demand.
