history

The distillery was founded in 1824 by Sir Alexander Ramsay and was the second to receive the official distillery license (the first went to Glenlivet ). A large number of changes of ownership followed. Among the owners was the elder brother Sir Thomas Gladstone of the British Prime Minister William Ewart Gladstone at the time . After a fire, the distillery was almost completely rebuilt between 1887 and 1890. In 1960 the company's own malt floors were closed and in 1966 the number of stills was increased from two to four. The distillery has belonged to Whyte & Mackay since 1973 , which was bought in 2007 for £ 595 million by United Spirits Limited , a subsidiary of India's The UB Group , and Whyte & Mackay to Emperador International Ltd. at the end of October 2014 for £ 430 million. resold.

production

The water of the distillery, which belongs to the Highlands / Eastern Highlands region, comes from two springs in the Cairngorms . The distillery has a mash tun (4.6 t), eight fermentation vats (26,000 l each) made of Douglas fir , two wash stills (13,000 l each) and two spirit stills (13,500 l and 11,500 l).
