structure

Ostrý Roháč

The Slovak part of the mountain range is divided into six geomorphological sub-units:

  • Osobitá (highest peak: Osobitá, 1687 m)
  • Sivý vrch (Sivý vrch, 1805 m)
  • Liptovské Tatry (Bystrá, 2248 m)
  • Roháče (Baníkov, 2178 m)
  • Červené vrchy (Kresanica, Polish Krzesanica, 2122 m)
  • Liptovské kopy (Veľká kopa, 2122 m)

Roháče denotes the central part of the Western Tatras; in Slovakia this term is sometimes used in colloquial language for the entire mountain range.

There are four areas in Poland:

  • Grześ ,
  • Kasprowy Wierch ,
  • Czerwone Wierchy (corresponds to the Červené vrchy),
  • Ornak .

character

Roháče

The Western Tatras consist of both limestone and crystalline rock. This diversity led to varied landscapes, but also to a very pronounced diversity of plants. The main ridge of the mountains is approx. 30 km long and runs in a west-east direction. The side ridges branching off from it are - similar to the High Tatras - a little longer in the north than in the south. The central part - Roháče - is predominantly rocky and, compared to the other parts of the Western Tatras, has the most high mountain character. The tree line is around 1500 m; above it extends a zone overgrown with dense crooked wood up to approx. 1800 m . Above this, meadows and rocks dominate.

tourism

Despite its impressive landscape, the Western Tatras - in terms of visitor interest - are in the shadow of the High Tatras. There is a dense network of hiking trails in the mountains. The main ridge is also accessible - except for an approximately 5 km long section in the eastern part. Important tourist bases in the Western Tatras are the settlement of Zverovka in the north-west and the Žiarska chata mountain hut in the south.

natural reserve

Baníkov

On the Slovak side, the Tatra National Park ( Tatranský národný park , TANAP) was established in 1949 . This contains - in addition to the High Tatras and Belianske (Belianske Tatry) - initially only the eastern part of West Tatras with the mountain groups Červené vrchy and Liptovské kopy. In 1987 the national park was then extended to the entire Western Tatras. Inside and outside the national park, a number of particularly valuable areas have been placed under stricter protection:
