Zuberec ( Hungarian Bölényfalu , Polish Zuberzec ) is a municipality in northern Slovakia . It is located at the foot of the Western Tatras in the Arwa region near the Polish border, about 19 km from Tvrdošín .
The place was first mentioned in writing in 1593 as Zwberczyc . The name comes from the Slovak name of the bison ( zubor ). The settlement structure as a Waldhufendorf village can still be seen very well on the site : originally the fields lay as strips directly behind the individual farmsteads. The open-air museum Museum Orava is located four km east of the village. Every year on the first weekend in August, the open-air museum hosts the folklore festival with a fair, which is known far beyond the region.
