history

Ruin of an ironworks near the place

Finds from the Hallstatt period and a settlement of the Puchau culture are proven in the municipality . The place itself was created in the 16th century as part of the Wallachian colonization on the territory of the estate of the Arwa Castle , which at that time belonged to the Thurzo family. The first written mention comes from the year 1556 (other information 1564). The name refers to the mountain Biel ( 750  m nm ) south of the place. The main sources of income were sheep, cattle breeding and forestry, at times also a brewery, mill, saw and pottery. In 1836 the construction of an ironworks and an attached hammer mill began in order to process the iron ore extracted from the surrounding mines. The iron was too brittle, however, so operations were stopped again in 1864.
