history

The present municipality was established in 1968 through the merger of Dolný Štefanov (until 1948 "Dolný Štepanov"; Hungarian Alsóstepanó ) and Horný Štefanov (until 1948 "Horný Štepanov"; Hungarian Felsőstepanó ). The municipality also includes Lavkovo , which was incorporated into Dolný Štefanov after 1882 and which disappeared into the Orava reservoir in 1953.

The original place arose in the second half of the 14th century and was first mentioned in writing in 1355 as Chepanopataka . In the 15th century the village belonged to the Kubínyi family . The place Horný Štefanov emerged from the division of Štefanov in 1593 and was then called Felso Stepanowo . Because of the Kuruc uprisings, there was devastation in the 17th century. In 1828 there were 56 houses and 331 inhabitants in Dolný Štefanov, 61 houses and 366 inhabitants in Horný Štefanov, who were mainly employed as farmers.

Until 1918, the places in Arwa County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia. During the time of the first Czechoslovak Republic, the inhabitants were also known as weavers and carpenters.

Loosely translated the community name means "Stephansdorf an der Arwa".
