The place Horný Štefanov emerged from the division of Štefanov in 1593 and was then called Felso Stepanowo . Because of the Kuruc uprisings, there was devastation in the 17th century. In 1828 there were 56 houses and 331 inhabitants in Dolný Štefanov, 61 houses and 366 inhabitants in Horný Štefanov, who were mainly employed as farmers.
Until 1918, the places in Arwa County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia. During the time of the first Czechoslovak Republic, the inhabitants were also known as weavers and carpenters.
