Čimhová (Hungarian Csimhova ) is a municipality in northern Slovakia with 679 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019), which belongs to the Okres Tvrdošín , part of the Žilinský kraj and belongs to the traditional Orava landscape .
geography
The municipality is located on the eastern edge of the Oravská vrchovina mountains on the Oravica , near the state border with Poland . The center of the village is at an altitude of 644 m nm and is six kilometers from Trstená and 12 kilometers from Tvrdošín .
Neighboring communities are Vitanová in the east and Liesek in the south, west and north.
history
Čimhová was mentioned in writing for the first time in 1438 as Chemechowa , after the noble family Platthy received the unpopulated land between Trstená and the border with Poland in a legal act for services in the fight against the Ottomans. The newly founded place was named after the common bird cherry (Prunus padus) , which was called čemucha in the vernacular . In 1608 there were 11 houses in the village, three of which were abandoned. In the 17th century, Čimhová was a center of recatholicization in Arwa County. In 1828 there were 67 houses and 315 inhabitants who were employed as farmers and linen weavers.
The place in Arwa County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary until 1918 and then became part of Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia.
From 1979 to 1990 Čimhová was part of the neighboring municipality of Liesek.

According to the 2011 census, there were 662 residents in Čimhová, including 652 Slovaks and two each from Poles and Czechs . One resident indicated a different ethnic group and five residents gave no information about the ethnic group .
658 residents confessed to the Roman Catholic Church and the denomination of four residents was not determined.
