The Okres Tvrdošín is an administrative unit in the north of Slovakia with 36,203 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) and an area of 479 square kilometers. It borders clockwise on the Polish Voivodeship Lesser Poland in the north and east and the Okresy Liptovský Mikuláš in the south, Dolný Kubín in the southwest and Námestovo in the northwest.

The Okres lies in the traditional region of Orava (Eng. Arwa ) and consists of a mixture of a valley basin and some mountains. The Oravská kotlina basin extends to the north around the town of Trstená . The part in the Okres also includes a large part of the Arwa Reservoir . A small part of the Oravská Magura Mountains extends west of the town of Tvrdošín . To the southeast of both cities stretch the Skorušinské vrchy and part of the Western Tatras , which is part of the Tatra National Park . The main river of the Okres is the Orava , which is fed by the Arwa reservoir , other rivers are the Jelešňa, Oravica and Studený potok.

The main road in the Okres is I / 59 (E 77), which continues from Dolný Kubín through Tvrdošín and Trstená to Poland. The network is supplemented by state roads II / 520 (Námestovo – border near Suchá Hora) and II / 584 (Podbiel – Liptovský Mikuláš) and other district roads. Only part of the R3 expressway around Trstená has been completed so far in the high-ranking Slovak road network . The only railway line is the Arwatalbahn , which coming from Kraľovany ends today in Trstená. The part after Suchá Hora and Polish border has been omitted since 1975.

Historically, the district lies entirely in the former Arwa County (see also the list of historical counties in Hungary ). In the administrative division of Czechoslovakia from 1960–1990 he was part of the Okres Dolný Kubín, within the Stredoslovenský kraj ( Central Slovak Regional Association ).
