Stredoslovenský kraj
The Stredoslovenský kraj ("Central Slovak District") was a territorial unit in the Slovak part of Czechoslovakia in the years 1960–1969 and 1970–1990 . Its area was 17,976 km² in 1978 and 1,492,144 inhabitants lived there. The state capital was Banská Bystrica . The largest cities in the late 1970s were Banská Bystrica (69,000 inhabitants), Žilina (66,000 inhabitants) and Martin (57,000 inhabitants). It bordered in the north on Poland , in the east on the Východoslovenský kraj , in the south on Hungary , in the west on the Západoslovenský kraj and in the north-west on the Czech Severomoravský kraj.
The Kraj was the largest and most diverse Kraj in the Czechoslovakia. The area included the Javorníky , Beskydy , Little and Big Fatra and Western Tatras . The western border was formed by the Strážovské vrchy , Vogelgebirge and Štiavnické vrchy mountains . The Low Tatras and the Slovak Ore Mountains run from the Banská Bystrica area and extend into the Východoslovenský kraj area. The lowest part along the border with Hungary was the Juhoslovenská kotlina with a height of about 200 m. The highest peak was the Bystrá ( 2248 m nm ) in the Western Tatras.
The most important rivers with their valleys were the Waag in the north, Hron in the center and Ipeľ in the south. Other smaller rivers are the Upper Nitra , Kysuca , Slatina and Rimava .
At the end of 1990 the Kraj was dissolved. Today Žilinský kraj , Banskobystrický kraj and partly Trenčiansky kraj are located in the area .
The district was divided into several districts ("okres"). Below is a table of the circles:
