The Okres Liptovský Mikuláš is an administrative unit in central Slovakia with 72,216 inhabitants (December 31, 2019) and an area of 1,341 km². It is the easternmost part of Žilinský kraj and borders clockwise on Poland ( Lesser Poland Voivodeship ) in the north and Okresy Poprad in the east, Brezno in the south, Ružomberok in the west and Dolný Kubín and Tvrdošín in the north-west.

The Okres comprises the central and eastern part of the Liptovská kotlina (German about Liptauer Kessel) within the larger Podtatranská kotlina (German about Lower Tatra Kessel) on the upper reaches of the Waag (or its source rivers Biely Váh and Čierny Váh ), between the Chočské vrchy and the Western Tatras north and the Low Tatras south of the river. Immediately west of Liptovský Mikuláš is the Liptov reservoir ( Liptovská Mara in Slovak ) and the smaller Bešeňová reservoir ( vodná nádrž Bešeňová in Slovak ).

Historically, the district lies entirely in the former Liptov County (see also the list of historical counties of Hungary ) and today forms the sub-units of Central Elliptov (Slovak stredný Liptov ) and Upper Liptov (Slovak horný Liptov ) of the Liptov tourist region .
