history

The place was mentioned in writing for the first time in 1469 as Maly Dowal , as it was then called after it was spun off from the village of Dovalovo. Kokava belonged to the estate of the Liptovský Hrádok castle, but did not last long as it was destroyed again in the 1470s and for a long time was only a man named Wysnyedowalow . Only after the Wallachian colonization on the occasion of the landlords Balassa was the village re-established, mentioned in 1588 as Kokawa alias Nouadowallo and taxed at the rate of a porta in 1596 .

The first sacred building was a Simon and Judas wooden chapel, which was mentioned in the 17th century and was replaced by a church in 1825–1830. In 1828 there were 99 houses and 1,390 inhabitants who were carters, shepherds, woodcutters, coalers and workers in the local iron hammer. In 1879 almost the entire village burned down in a major fire, with the exception of the two churches and the Protestant school.
