Smrečany (Slovak until the 19th century "Smrčany"; Hungarian Szmrecsán ) is a municipality in northern Slovakia with 680 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019), which belongs to the Okres Liptovský Mikuláš , part of the Žilinský kraj and is part of the traditional landscape Liptau is counted.

The community is located in the central part of the basin Liptovská kotlina (part of the larger Podtatranská kotlina ) below the Western Tatras , in the valley of springing there brook Smrečianka . The center of the village lies at an altitude of 718 m nm and is nine kilometers from Liptovský Mikuláš .
Neighboring municipalities are Jalovec in the north, Žiar in the northeast, Veterná Poruba in the east, Liptovský Mikuláš (districts Okoličné and Liptovský Mikuláš) in the south, Trstené in the west and again Jalovec in the northwest.
history
Smrečany was first mentioned in writing in 1299 in connection with a legal dispute as Zemerchen . In the 13th century, the Bohumir and Szerafin families were landlords, from which the later Szmrecsányi family emerged . The first church already existed at the end of the 13th century, the current Gothic church was built after 1349. At the end of the 16th century, Smrečany had several country estates, a manor mill and a parish in addition to subject houses and was one of the larger towns in the area. In 1715 there were 23 taxpayers living in the village, in 1784 the village had 66 houses and 526 inhabitants, in 1828 there were 65 houses and 614 inhabitants who were employed as miners in iron ore mines , linen weavers, but also as stonecutters and seasonal workers in other parts of the Kingdom of Hungary.
The place in Liptov County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary until 1918 and then came to Czechoslovakia and finally to Slovakia. In the first Czechoslovak republic, agriculture was the main source of income, plus there was a roller mill and power station founded in 1920. On October 28, 1944, shortly after the SNP was put down , 10 residents were killed in retaliation by Nazi German units and the village was set on fire.
Place name
Smrečany got its name from the previously abundant spruce trees (Slovak: smrek ).

According to the 2011 census, Smrečany had 625 inhabitants, 604 of whom were Slovaks , two Czechs and one from Rome . One resident indicated a different ethnic group and 17 residents gave no information about the ethnic group .
351 residents committed to the Evangelical Church AB, 116 residents to the Roman Catholic Church, three residents to the Evangelical Methodist Church and one resident to the Greek Catholic Church; 11 residents professed a different denomination. 105 residents had no denomination and 38 residents had no denomination.
