history

Today's municipality was created in 1924 through the merger of the previously independent towns Kráľovská Ľubeľa (Hungarian Királylubella ) and Zemianska Ľubeľa (Hungarian Nemeslubella ). Both remain cadastral communities to this day.

The original place was first mentioned in writing as Libela in 1278 , when Johann Galicus, a Magister of Walloon origin, received a piece of land between Ľubeľa and the neighboring town of Vlachy in an act of donation from Ladislaus IV . However, the crown kept the place itself, which belonged to the territory of the Liptov Castle . In the Middle Ages there were several gold mines in the Kľačianka Valley . After the fall of Liptov Castle in the 1470s, the village known at that time as Kyral Lubele (roughly: royal Lubele) became part of the Likava Castle estate . Later it was owned by the noble families Okolicsány , Pongrácz , Szmrecsányi and Reviczky . In the 18th century there were antimony mines in the area. In 1784 the village had 59 houses and 471 inhabitants, in 1828 there were 75 houses and 601 inhabitants.

The later place Zemianska Ľubela was mentioned for the first time in 1535 as Lwbelye nobilium and, in contrast to the original place, was mainly owned by noble families, including Bajcsy , Köröskény , Kubínyi , Rakovszky and Turánszky . In 1784 the village had 47 houses and 369 inhabitants, in 1828 there were 51 houses and 444 inhabitants.

Until 1918, the place in Liptov County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia. In the first Czechoslovak Republic, the inhabitants commuted to the mines near Handlová and Salgótarján . During the Second World War the community took part in the Slovak National Uprising , shortly before the retreat in March 1945, Ľubeľa was partially set on fire by the Wehrmacht.
