history

A mining log cabin in town

The history of Nižná Boca and Vyšná Boca is closely related to mining. In the 13th century, Saxon “guests” were invited to mine and mine gold ore here. Gold, silver, copper and iron ore mines were established here on both sides of the Boca River in the mid-16th century. In 1558 60 kg of gold were extracted from the mines. Declining profitability and disputes between the royal chamber and the Szentiványi family caused the decline in the 17th century, before mining activity increased again in the 18th century. In 1784 the village had 141 houses and 798 inhabitants. The mines were finally closed after 1860 and the residents were now employed as linen weavers, cattle farmers and miners in foreign mines. In 1882 the previously independent place Prostredná Boca (then in Hungarian Középboca or Királyboca ) was incorporated.

The place in Liptov County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary until 1918 and then came to Czechoslovakia and finally to Slovakia.
