Važec (until 1927 "Vážec" in Slovak; German Waagsdorf / Weißwaag , Hungarian Vázsec - until 1895 Vazsec ) is a municipality in northern Slovakia . It lies in the valley Podtatranská kotlina on the river Biely Váh ( White Váh ) at the foot of kozie chrbty -Gebirges and the High Tatras , about 25 kilometers from Poprad ( Poprad ) and 30 kilometers from Liptovsky Mikulas ( St. Nicholas in the Liptov ) away.
The place was first mentioned in writing in 1280, but the date is controversial and some historians also give 1269 or 1286 as the date of foundation. The Važec stalactite cave is located near the village .
The place is located directly on the D1 motorway and on the state road 18 and has a motorway exit. It is also located on the Košice – Žilina railway line and has a stop.

In Važec there is a war cemetery for the fallen soldiers of the western and central Slovakia in the two world wars. It offers space for 8,000 graves.
