Ján Michalko

Ján Michalko (born October 16, 1912 in Važec ; † 1990 in Bratislava ) was a Slovak Protestant theologian , bishop general and university professor .

Life

After obtaining his university entrance qualification , Michalko studied Protestant theology in Bratislava and Basel from 1933 to 1937 . There he heard lectures from Karl Barth , Eduard Thurneysen and Adolf Köberle . The service of the priest he was on June 27, 1937 ordained . Initially, he worked as a pastor in the parishes of Spišská Nová Ves (Zipser Neudorf) and Pozdišovce . His academic work began, he continued, earning his doctorate on the subject of church and nation in the Protestant theology of the 20th century on 26 April 1946 of the Protestant Theological Faculty in Bratislava theological doctorate . Since November 1, 1947, he began teaching at this faculty. According to the law on the theological faculties , he was appointed dean of his faculty in 1952, which was moved from Bratislava (Pressburg) to Modern / Modra in 1953 . After a one-year interim period , he was again active as dean from 1960 to 1968. In addition, he worked as a pastor successively in Myślenice , Bratislava Rač a (Ratzersdorf) and Bratislava.

On November 15, 1970 Michalko was introduced to Bratislava as Bishop General of the Evangelical Church of the Augsburg Confession in Slovakia . He held this office from 1970 to 1990.

From 1965 to 1970 Michalko was chairman of the Liturgical Commission of the Lutheran World Federation (LWF) and from 1970 to 1976 a member of its central committee.

Michalko was a member of the Societas Ethica . In 1973 he signed the Leuenberg Agreement on communion for his church .

Michalko got access to the Christian Peace Conference through Josef Hromádka , in which he has participated since its foundation. At the pre-conference in Modra in 1957 he was already dean of the faculty. Since 1971 was a member of its working committee, and in 1975 he was elected one of the six vice-presidents of the CFK.

Bishop Michalko was one of the founding members of the Martin Niemöller Foundation in 1974.

Because of his proximity to the communist regime of the former Czecho-Slovakia , his personality is viewed critically by historians and many theologians. As secretary of the ' Christian Peace Conference ' he was an avowed supporter of a 'socialist' Czecho-Slovak state.
