Liptovský Ján (until 1927 Svätý Ján , until 1960 Liptovský Svätý Ján ; German Sankt Johann in der Liptau, Hungarian Szentiván ) is a municipality in central Slovakia in the northwest of the Low Tatras .
location
The community is located at the lower end of the Jánska Dolina . This valley stretches from the peaks of the Ďumbier (2043.4 meters) and the Králička (1807.4 meters) in the south to the Váh in the north. To the west it becomes through the mountain range of Poludnica (1548.7 meters) and Krakova hoľa (1751.6 meters), to the east through the peaks of Smrekovica (1285.1 meters), Ohnište (1538.0 meters) and Rovná hoľa (1722.9 meters) (each from north to south). The Štiavnica flows through the Jánska Dolina and flows into the Váh at the end of the valley . There are several caves that are common in the region in the rock walls lining the river.

A chapel located on the site of today's church was first mentioned in writing in 1200. Already in the 14th century the place was famous for its healing springs . It was described in 1549 by the mineralogist Juraj Werner in his original title O liečivých prameňoch Uhorska ( English : About Hungary's mineral springs) published in Switzerland . In 1943, camp 132 Slo of the German Kinderlandverschickung was located in the village .

In summer, the nearby mountain peaks of the Low Tatras such as the Ďumbier or the Chopok can be climbed on well-marked hiking trails . The outdoor pool on the Štiavnica is also available. In winter there are four tow lifts in the municipality ; the famous ski resort Jasná is only approx. 20 km away. The year-round swimming pool with thermal springs is offered in the Hotel Máj , which has a proven healing effect on skin diseases, musculoskeletal disorders, metabolic diseases, urological and gynecological disorders, and nervous, heart and circulatory diseases.
