Veterná Poruba (Hungarian Szélporuba , older Szélesporuba ) is a municipality in northern Slovakia with 380 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019), which belongs to the Okres Liptovský Mikuláš , part of the Žilinský kraj , and is part of the traditional Liptov region .

geography

The community is located in the central part of the basin Liptovská kotlina (part of the larger Podtatranská kotlina ) below the West Tatra , on a ridge between the streams Okoličianka and Stošianka , both in the catchment area of the Vah . The center of the village lies at an altitude of 820  m nm and is eight kilometers from Liptovský Mikuláš .

Neighboring municipalities are Žiar in the north, Liptovský Mikuláš (cadastral municipality Svätý Štefan) in the northeast, Liptovský Ondrej in the east, Liptovský Mikuláš (district Okoličné ) in the south and Smrečany in the west.

history

Veterná Poruba was first mentioned in writing in 1353 as Poruba and was created by colonizing the lands of the Okolicsányi family , who owned the village until 1848. 16 taxpayers lived in the village in 1715, in 1784 the village had 40 houses and 302 inhabitants, in 1828 there were 37 houses and 336 inhabitants who were employed as farmers and forest workers.

The place in Liptov County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary until 1918 and then came to Czechoslovakia and finally to Slovakia.

The place name can be freely translated as "Windige Hau ", with the word Poruba pointing to clearing.

Not far from Veterná Poruba is the former village of Svätý Štefan, which was mentioned for the first time in 1272 and was named after the patronage of the local church. In 1719 the village was abandoned after a natural disaster.

According to the 2011 census, Veterná Poruba had 374 inhabitants, 343 of whom were Slovaks and one Russian . 30 residents did not provide any information on ethnicity .

242 residents committed to the Evangelical Church AB, 61 residents to the Roman Catholic Church, three residents to the Evangelical Methodist Church, two residents to the Greek Catholic Church and one resident to the Seventh-day Adventists; one resident professed a different denomination. 30 residents had no denomination and 32 residents had no denomination.
