Demänovská Dolina (Hungarian Deménvölgy ) is a municipality in the northwest of the Low Tatras in central Slovakia . It was created on August 1, 1964 as a spin-off from the municipalities of Bodice and Demänova (today both districts of Liptovský Mikuláš ), whereby the settlements Tri Studničky , Jaskyne , Repiská , Lúčky and Jasná were merged. The municipality takes its name from the valley of the same name, which with its 16 kilometers length is one of the most visited valleys in the Low Tatras .
Geography and geology
Geologically, the municipality can be divided into two parts: the upper, granite , open part and the narrow limestone gorge to the north and lower .
Geographically, the upper part of the municipality is formed by the peaks in the northwest of the Siná (1560 meters), in the northeast of the Kraková hoľa (1751.8 meters), in the southeast of the Ďumbier (2043.4 meters) and in the southwest of the Poľana (1889.7 Meter). The lower part of the municipality is characterized by the two mountain ridges running in a north-south direction. The Demänovka and Zadná voda rivers flow in the valley.
history
The municipality has been inhabited since the Ice Age, as evidenced by excavations in the Okno Cave (Jaskyňa Okno). After that, the municipality was not populated for a long time. It was only with the discovery of iron ore that the settlement of the municipality became interesting again. Before the municipal area was discovered for tourism, shepherds and their sheep settled in the high altitudes; among other things, they produced the famous Liptov cheese .
tourism
The place is characterized by tourism. In summer there are hiking tours from Jasná to the important peaks of the Low Tatras - z. B. Chopok and Ďumbier - possible. In winter Jasná is a well-known ski area.
Significant sights are two caves of the karst cave system in the Low Tatras:
- Demänová stalactite cave (Demänovská jaskyňa Slobody),
- Demänová Ice Cave (Demänovská ľadová jaskyňa).
- Okno Cave (Jaskyňa Okno)
