Veľké Borové (Hungarian Nagyborove ) is a municipality in northern Slovakia with 46 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019), which belongs to the Okres Liptovský Mikuláš , part of the Žilinský kraj , and is part of the traditional Liptov region .

The municipality is located in a high valley within the Lower Tatras furrow (in Slovak Podtatranská brázda ) between the Choč Mountains in the south and the Skorušinské vrchy in the north by the Borovianka brook . Near the place there are two breakthrough valleys through the Choč Mountains, namely the Prosiecka dolina southwest and the Kvačianska dolina southeast of Veľké Borové. The center of the village lies at an altitude of 828  m nm and is 32 kilometers from Tvrdošín and 35 kilometers from Liptovský Mikuláš .

The settlement Jóbovská Roztoka (also spelled Jóbova Ráztoka), which was incorporated into the municipality after 1808, also belongs to the municipality.

Neighboring municipalities are Chlebnice in the north, Malé Borové in the northeast, Huty in the east, Kvačany in the southeast, Prosiek in the south and Malatiná in the west.

history

Church of Exaltation of the Cross in Veľké Borové

The village, which consists of individual settlements, arose in the 16th century after settlement by Gorals from the upper Arwa , was mentioned in writing for the first time in 1646 and was owned by the noble Joob family . Until the late 18th century, the place was together with Veľké Borové a municipality. In 1784 the village had 64 houses and 461 inhabitants, in 1828 there were 112 houses and 519 inhabitants who were employed as farmers, shepherds and home glassmakers.

Until 1918, the place in Liptov County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia.

According to the 2011 census, Veľké Borové had 60 inhabitants, 59 of whom were Slovaks . One resident gave no information about ethnicity .

59 residents professed their support for the Roman Catholic Church. The denomination of one resident was not determined.
