Vavrišovo (Hungarian Vavrisó ) is a municipality in northern Slovakia with 690 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019), which belongs to the Okres Liptovský Mikuláš , part of the Žilinský kraj , and is part of the traditional Liptov region .

The community is located in the Liptovská kotlina basin (part of the larger Podtatranská kotlina ) on the right bank of the Belá , below the Western Tatras . The center of the village lies at an altitude of 700  m nm and is six kilometers from Liptovský Hrádok and 15 kilometers from Liptovský Mikuláš .

Neighboring communities are Pribylina in the north and north-east, Liptovský Hrádok (via the Dovalovo district ) in the east and south-east, Liptovský Peter in the south and south-west and Jamník in the west and north-west.

history

Vavrišov was mentioned in writing for the first time in 1286 as Vayrasou (according to other sources only in 1346 as Waurisow ) and is named after the first landowner, a certain Lorenz ( Vavrinec in Slovak ). In August 1709 took place in the district Švihrová a battle between the Kuruc and pro-Habsburg Labanzen place, the village was completely destroyed as a consequence. Soon after, however, it was rebuilt and in 1715 had 36 taxpayers. In 1828 there were 60 houses and 464 inhabitants who were craftsmen, farmers and stonecutters. In the second half of the 19th century the population worked in greater numbers than bricklayers in the Hungarian capital Budapest.

Until 1918, the place in Liptov County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia.

According to the 2011 census, 655 people lived in Vavrišovo, including 543 Slovaks , 18 Roma , 3 Czechs and 1 German, Magyar, Russian and Ukrainian each. 89 inhabitants did not give any information on ethnicity.

301 residents committed to the Evangelical Church AB, 108 residents to the Roman Catholic Church, 24 residents to the Baptists, 7 residents to the Evangelical Methodist Church, 5 residents to the Jehovah's Witnesses, 2 residents each to the Greek Catholic Church and 2 to the Orthodox Church as well as 1 resident for each Jewish community and one for the Reformed Church; 1 resident confessed to another denomination. 89 inhabitants were without a denomination and the denomination was not determined for 114 inhabitants.
