The Košice – Žilina railway is a main line in Slovakia , which was originally built and operated by the Kaschau-Oderberger Railway . It runs in an east-west direction essentially along the Hornád , through the Podtatranská kotlina basin and then on the Waag . It touches some of the most famous mountain regions in Slovakia, such as the Little and Big Fatra , the Low and High Tatras and the Slovak Ore Mountains .

The main line between Košice and Žilina is part of the most important railroad in Slovakia. In the east-west direction, it is the only powerful and fully electrified main line in the country. The route is therefore of outstanding importance not only for goods traffic within Slovakia, but also in transit between Western Europe and the Ukraine .

history

Continuous rail traffic on the entire route of the Košice -Oderberg Railway from Košice via Žilina to Oderberg (today Bohumín ) was opened on March 18, 1872.

The line was initially single-track. Due to the rapidly increasing demand, the double-track expansion began in the mid-1930s, which continued until 1955. In detail, the following sections have been released for double-track traffic:

A second (parallel) tunnel and a second bridge over the Waag had to be built near Strečno .

As part of the double-track expansion of the section from Kraľovany to Turany , a new tunnel was built and the route was relocated over a distance of 6.8 kilometers due to the construction of the Krpeľany reservoir .

At the same time, due to the construction of the Ružín reservoir, the route between Ružín and Margecany zastávka was relocated by tunneling under Bujanov mountain.

Another route change was necessary in the 1970s with the construction of the Liptov reservoir .

The route was electrified between 1956 and 1961.

Current condition

Express trains run every two hours during the day, as well as some Intercity and Eurocity trains as well as local trains. An international pair of SuperCity trains has been running on the route every day since December 2014 . This connects Prague with Košice. It takes 7.5 hours for the entire journey. It is served by the fastest České dráhy trains , the 680 series . Freight traffic is also quite intensive.
