The Bratislava – Žilina railway is a main line in Slovakia . It runs from Bratislava through the valley of the Vah ( Vah ) to Žilina . The line is part of the Pan-European Railway Corridor V.

history

The section between what was then Pressburg (today: Bratislava ) and Svätý Jur was opened as a horse-drawn tram as early as 1840. It was the first railway line in the Kingdom of Hungary . In 1846 it was extended to Trnava .

The horse-drawn tram was bought up in 1871 by the newly founded Vágvölgyi vasút (Waagtalbahn). The Vágvölgyi vasút received the concession in 1872 to convert the line into a standard-gauge locomotive railway and to extend it to Sillein (Žilina). For financial reasons, however, only the line to Trenčín could be completed by 1878.

Opening dates

  • 1873: Pressburg – Tyrnau (Bratislava – Trnava).
  • June 2, 1876: Tyrnau – Waag Neustadtl (Trnava – Nové Mesto nad Váhom)
  • May 1, 1878: Waag Neustadtl – Trenčín (Nové Mesto nad Váhom – Trenčín).

In 1878 the Waagtalbahn was nationalized. The line was now owned by the Hungarian State Railways (MÁV), which began operating on June 6, 1879. However, MÁV gave the route in exchange for the Bruck an der Leitha – Újszőny route to the Austro-Hungarian State Railroad Company (StEG), which also received the concession to continue to Sillein. The StEG started operations on January 1, 1883.

The section from Trenčín (today: Zlatovce station) to Sillein went into operation on November 1, 1883.

The Žilina – Leopoldov section has been double-tracked since 1904, and the entire line has been running since 1941.

Today the line is part of the main Slovak traffic axis between Bratislava and Košice . The section from Rača to Trnava is currently being expanded as part of a European Union project for line speeds of up to 160 km / h. Other projects deal with the modernization of the track and the train stations along the section from Bratislava to Nové Mesto nad Váhom.

From 2015, the line between Púchov and Žilina is to be expanded to 160 km / h, which among other things will require the construction of two tunnels.

The system separation point between the contact wire voltages of 3 kV = (from Žilina) and 25 kV, 50 Hz (from Bratislava) is on the open section between Dolné Kočkovce and Púchov.
