The route network of the Vágvölgyi vasút

The Vágvölgyi vasút (VVV), German: Waagtalbahn (WTB) was a railway company in Hungary whose routes were in what is now Slovakia . The railway area stretched northeast of Pressburg (today: Bratislava ) along the eponymous river Waag . The seat of the company was in Pressburg.

history

The forerunner of the Waagtalbahn was the so-called Tyrnau horse-drawn railway , which ran between Pressburg and Szered (Sereď) since 1846 . This company was bought up in 1871 by the newly founded Waagtalbahn. The concession to convert the line into a standard-gauge locomotive railway was awarded by the Kingdom of Hungary in 1872. Part of this concession were also branch lines from Tyrnava (Trnava) to Trenčín and from Pressburg to Ödenburg (Sopron). Another line was to connect to the network of the Kaiser Ferdinands-Nordbahn (KFNB) in the Austrian town of Lundenburg (Břeclav).

For financial reasons, only the lines from Pressburg via Tyrnau to Trenčín and to Szered were built and put into operation. The other licensed lines were not implemented until 1878. In 1879 the company sold its route network with an operating length of 138.428 kilometers to the Hungarian state.

The Kingdom of Hungary, however, surrendered the lines to the Austro-Hungarian State Railway Company (StEG) in 1882 as part of a route swap. At the same time, the continuation of the line to Sillein (Žilina) to connect to the Kaschau-Oderberger Bahn (Ks.Od.) and the branching Vlaratalbahn was newly licensed in favor of the StEG. These two lines started operating in 1884 and 1887, respectively. In 1891 the Waagtalbahn, together with all the Hungarian StEG lines, came back into state ownership.

The routes still exist. Today they belong to the network of railways of the Slovak Republic (ŽSR). The route from Bratislava to Trenčín is now part of the important inner-Slovak main line between Bratislava and Košice .
