The Bratislava – Hegyeshalom railway is a single-track, electrified main line in Slovakia and Hungary . The line runs from Bratislava main station east to the center of the capital, passing to the south of the Danube nearby railway station Bratislava-Petržalka and to the Hungarian border at Rajka . After a few kilometers, the line in Hegyeshalom connects to the international main line of the Vienna-Raaber Bahn and the single- track Hegyeshalom-Szombathely railway . From the timetable change on December 13, 2009 to the timetable change on December 10, 2017, there was no passenger traffic between Rajka and Bratislava-Petržalka. Today, in addition to regular trains between Hegyeshalom and Rajka, up to five pairs of trains run daily across the border between Rajka and Rusovce from Hegyeshalom and Rajka to Bratislava-Petržalka. One pair of trains only runs from Bratislava-Petržalka to Rajka and back. Between Rajka and Hegyeshalom, the non-international, regular trains are partially tied through to Csorna or Győr.

history

The current railway line was opened on November 9, 1891 and was part of a railway line from Pressburg to Szombathely . This route ran over the Old Bridge (then Franz-Josephs-Brücke), which was completed a year earlier, and ended east of the old town to the Bratislava-Nivy train station (then Nové Mesto, German New Town).

At the time of Comecon , this single-track line ran almost parallel to the Iron Curtain and was therefore of strategic importance for Czechoslovakia and Hungary, especially as a connection between Bratislava and Győr . Large parts of the section of the railway line north of the Danube and the Nové Mesto stations and the central freight station ( Bratislava ústredná nákladná stanica ) were built in 1962. During this time, the connection to the new Slovnaft oil refinery was established. In 1985 the port bridge, then known as Most hrdinov Dukly (Dukla Helden Bridge), was opened in Bratislava. This replaced the only bridge suitable for rail traffic, the Old Bridge , which changed the entire route considerably. The former terminus at Bratislava-Nivy was also demolished around this time.
