Swell:

The Budapest – Hegyeshalom railway is one of the most important railway lines in Hungary and the fastest connection between Budapest and western Hungary or Austria . The maximum speed between Kelenföld and Budaörs is 120 km / h, between Budaörs and Tata 140 km / h and since 2008 between Tata and Hegyeshalom 160 km / h allowed. As part of the TEN Corridor IV between Dresden and Arad , this route is a main axis for both international passenger and freight traffic. Runs every two hours Railjet of Budapest Keleti coming over Hegyeshalom and Vienna to Munich , also here run also Euro Night trains between Munich and Zurich and Budapest and Vienna and Bucharest .

history

On December 24, 1855, the extension of the Ostbahn from Vienna from Bruck an der Leitha to Győr was opened, and in the following year the trains ran to Újszőny, today's Komárom . It was not until 1884 that the gap between Kelenföld and Újszőny was closed, which also enabled continuous rail operations between Vienna and Budapest on the right bank of the Danube. The international trains, such as the Orient Express , continued to run via Szob – Bratislava – Marchegg , as higher speeds were possible on this route. It was not until many years later that they were transferred to the route via Győr, as this made crossing the border less necessary, which significantly shortened the journey time.

In the mid-2000s, ETCS L1 was installed between Vienna and Budapest as a pilot project , but it has now been deactivated again.

Accidents

On the evening of February 6, 2007, between Almásfüzítő and Komárom, a rear-end collision occurred between a freight train and the EURegio 9438, which was hauled by ÖBB 1116.017 and running from Tatabánya to Vienna Südbahnhof (east) . Since the safety system had failed, it was necessary to drive on sight. In contrast to the locomotive driver of the freight train, that of the EURegio did not, which is why he hit the end of the freight train at almost 100 km / h. The last car, a flat car , split the box from the frame up to the middle of the locomotive, the penultimate car of the freight train completely destroyed the locomotive above the frame in this area. The EURegio train driver died at the scene of the accident and four passengers were injured. The ÖBB 1116.017 was totaled, it was completely rebuilt with a new construction kit from Siemens and is now again in the ÖBB stand as ÖBB 1116.017 II (currently rented to Rail Cargo Hungaria ).

On the evening of December 23, 2013, locomotive 1116.212, which was hauling the RJ 165 from Zurich to Budapest, crashed into a car that had broken down on the level crossing near Győr . The locomotive caught fire immediately, the front driver's cab burned out completely, the electronics of the locomotive were largely damaged.
