Rail passenger transport

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The term rail passenger transport can be used for all types of passenger transport by rail and is also used to distinguish it from rail freight transport .

As a rule, it refers to railways in public transport that are operated for the purpose of transporting passengers. Today, because of the different treatment by the public authorities , rail passenger transport is divided into local rail passenger transport and long-distance rail passenger transport . If this differentiation is not necessary, the term rail passenger transport is used.

The term is usually not used when it comes to other track-based means of transport such as trams, underground trains or mountain railways. Because the first two fall under the concept of local road transport (ÖSPV). There is also non-public rail passenger transport, which can be carried out on works trains, for example, and is not subject to the same legal requirements as public rail passenger transport.
