The Kölner Hütte ( Italian Rifugio Fronza alle Coronelle ) - also Rosengartenhütte  - is a refuge and a mountain inn in the South Tyrolean Dolomites in the Italian Alps .

Location and surroundings

South side of the hut, below the hut the “Laurin Lounge” at the mountain station of the chair lift

The Kölner Hütte is located at an altitude of 2337  m on the western slope of the rose garden . It is located in the municipality of Welschnofen , from where it can also be reached by cable car (Laurin I gondola and König Laurin II chairlift). In summer, these hikers serve as an ascent aid, in winter the lift provides a connection to the Carezza - Karersee ski area . There are two options for ascent on foot: from the north-west from the Niger Pass ( 1690  m ) in approx. 1¾ hours or from the west Direction from the Frommeralm ( 1743  m ) in approx. 1½ hours - always on well-developed paths.

The hut serves as a base for hiking and climbing tours in the surrounding mountains. Via the Santnerpass via ferrata leading to the north and the Santnerpasshütte ( 2734  m ) you can reach the entrance to the normal route to the Rosengartenspitze . A hiking trail, the so-called Hirzelsteig, leads south towards the Karerpass ( 1745  m ) along the western slope of the Rosengarten group to the Paolina hut ( 2125  m ) and the Christomannos monument ( 2350  m ), which can be reached in 1¼ hours or 1¾ hours . In an easterly direction, following the arduous path over the Tschagerjoch ( 2650  m ), you can cross the main ridge of the Rosengarten group.

history

The hut was built in 1899 by the Rhineland section of the German and Austrian Alpine Club (DuOeAV). After the First World War , the hut was expropriated by the Italian state and handed over to the Verona section of the Club Alpino Italiano (CAI) in 1924 . This renamed the hut in memory of its President Aleardo Fronza, who died in the war. After a fire in 1966, a new building was built, which was completed in 1969.

Together with 24 other shelters expropriated by the state, the Kölner Hütte became the property of the Autonomous Province of Bozen - South Tyrol in 1999; At the end of 2010, the license for their management by the CAI expired. Since 2015, the state of South Tyrol has been supported in the management of the hut (assignment to tenants, supervision of management, renovation measures) by a joint commission, in which the AVS and CAI are represented in addition to the public sector .
