The Niger Pass (also Nigersattel , Italian Passo Nigra ) is a 1690  m high mountain pass in the Dolomites ( South Tyrol , Italy ). The pass, located below the Rosengarten massif , borders the Schlern-Rosengarten Nature Park, which was founded in 1974 . It connects the Tiers valley with the upper Eggental near the Karer pass . Its maximum gradient on the well-developed and little-traveled road is 24 percent, making it one of the steepest passes in Italy. Nevertheless, it is open all year round.

The Niger Pass is not a saddle , but a topographically favorable transition over the ridge that separates the Tiers valley with the municipality of Tiers from the Eggental valley, which runs parallel to the municipality of Welschnofen .

Two roads lead to Tiers from Blumau in the Eisack valley (approx. 325 m). The new road, built in the 1980s, first leads to the north slope of the Tiers valley and via Völser Aicha to Tiers, while the older, narrower road a little south of the new one runs along the Tiers valley and only climbs the north slope of the valley shortly before Tiers. Shortly before the village of Tiers (1028 m), both roads meet and lead through the forest to the east and south-east up to the pass. After crossing the pass, the road continues to climb and continues in a south-easterly direction on a flat ridge over the Frommeralm (valley station of the chairlift to the 2339 meter high Kölner Hütte in the Rosengarten) to the slightly higher Karer Pass (1745 m).

On 1668  m slm preferred Niger hut is a popular destination for hikers and cyclists , which are found in the area all year round.
