The Penser Joch ( Italian Passo di Pennes ) is a mountain pass in South Tyrol in northern Italy . At 2211 m slm it connects the Sarntal with the Wipptal near Sterzing . The west ridge and the east ridge of the Sarntal Alps meet at the yoke . As the crow flies, the pass forms the direct connection Innsbruck - Bozen . This is also where the border between the Sarntal and Freienfeld communities runs .
history
The road to the Penser Joch from the direction of Bozen had existed for a long time before the Fascist administration created the remaining connection to Sterzing for strategic military reasons between 1936 and 1938.
