The Colle Fauniera is a 2481  m slm high alpine pass in the province of Cuneo in the Italian Piedmont .

Location and surroundings

The pass road leads in a U-shape from the northeastern Pradleves in the Valle Grana over the top of the pass to the southeastern Demonte through the Vallone dell 'Arma, a side valley of the Valle Stura . The pass road, which is paved throughout, has only one lane in parts and leads through a lonely mountain landscape with great views, especially in the upper area.

The pilgrimage church of Santuario di San Magno is located on the northeast ramp in Valle Grana at 1760  m slm .

Adjacent pass heights

In the area of the pass, less than a hundred meters west of the pass road, there are further pass heights:

  • A good one kilometer north of the pass, an asphalt road branches off to the Colle d'Esischie ( 2370  m slm , location ) and leads from there to the Ponte Marmora in the Maira Valley , which is further north
  • The Colle Valcavera ( 2416  m slm , location ) branches off almost two kilometers (south) west of the top of the pass , which turns into a gravel road after a few hundred meters. The Colle Valcavera is the southeastern beginning of the Maira-Stura-Ridge Road, a route popular with off-road drivers
  • About 400 meters north of the pass, a smaller path branches off to the Colle del Vallonetto ( 2447  m slm , location )

Colle Fauniera, Esischie and Valcavera are part of the so-called Colli di Cuneo , a group of passes in the province of Cuneo.

Cycling

The Giro d'Italia has already ridden over the Fauniera and Esischie several times (at least 1999, 2001 and 2003)

At the top of the pass of the Colle Fauniera there is a memorial for the Italian cyclist Marco Pantani, who died in 2004, in the form of a stone sculpture depicting Pantani on his bike, with the inscription: "MARCO PANTANI, 2004, COL CUNEO". In honor of the Italian cyclist Fausto Coppi, who died in 1960, there is a small sundial with the inscription: "LA FAUSTO COPPI, IL TEMPO PASSA, LA GLORIA RESTA, 20 ^ EDIZIONE - 2007" at the top of the pass of the Colle d'Esischie .

At Pradleves and at the top of the Colle Fauniera there is a chip-controlled automated timekeeping system that is operated with solar modules (as can be seen on the picture of the top of the pass).
