The Maira is a 67 km long right tributary of the Po in the province of Cuneo and metropolitan city of Turin in the Italian region of Piedmont and namesake of the Valle Maira mountain valley through which it flows .
It rises at an altitude of 2600 m below the 2641 m high Col de Maurin in the Cottian Alps on the border with France, flows a short distance to the south, then turns east, after leaving the mountains to the northeast and finally to the north of his Towards confluence with Lombriasco in the Po. In addition to generating electricity, the river is also used for white water sports in its upper reaches.
The flow regime of the Maira corresponds to that of a typical torrente in the Alps: in spring the river carries the largest amount of water, while it can dry out in the summer months. Throughout the year, the Maira reaches an average flow rate of 13.5 m² / s.
