Jill Kinmont
Jill Kinmont Boothe (born February 16, 1936 in Los Angeles , California - † February 9, 2012 in Carson City , Nevada ) was an American ski racer .
Life
Kinmont was considered a promising candidate for the 1956 Winter Olympics in Cortina d'Ampezzo . At test competitions in Alta, Utah, Kinmont came off the slopes on January 25, 1955 during a descent and crashed into a tree. The fracture of her spine she suffered in the process led to paraplegia .
After attending a rehabilitation clinic, Kinmont continued her art studies at UCLA , graduating from the University of Washington with a teaching qualification. She initially taught in Washington and Beverly Hills and returned to her hometown of Bishop in 1975 , where she worked until her retirement in 1996. There she married her husband John in November 1976.
Kinmont's story was the subject of EG Valens' 1966 biography A Long Way Up . The book was filmed in 1975 with success by Larry Peerce under the title The reverse side of the medal (original title: The Other Side of the Mountain ), which was followed in 1978 by the sequel The Other Side of the Mountain Part II . In both films, Marilyn Hassett played the lead role of the failed ski racer.
