The small town of Bishop is located at the northern end of the Owens Valley on the eastern flank of the Sierra Nevada in Inyo County, California .

Near the city is the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest - part of the Inyo National Forest - where Methuselah , a long-lived pine tree , is the oldest known tree on earth. The Laws - Railway Museum is located in a disused railway station in 1883. The city's 100-year-old post office is a rustic eye-catcher.

Bishop is located at 1264  m at the northern end of the Owens Valley. The Sierra Nevada Mountains stretch to the west and the White Mountains to the east . The city is located on Bishop Creek , the largest tributary of the Owens River .

Several roads meet in the city: US Highway 395 runs north-south through the urban area and US Highway 6 begins north of Bishop. In addition, California State Route 168 runs through parts of Bishop in a west-east direction.
