The White Mountains ( German "White Mountains" ) are about 100 km long and about 15 km wide mountain range in California . In the north they reach just over the border with Nevada ; in the south they end at Big Pine . To the west, the Owens Valley borders the White Mountains . The highest mountain is the White Mountain Peak with a height of 4344 m ; it is the third tallest mountain in California.
In the dry climate of the White Mountains there is relatively little tree growth. In terms of conifer species , there are mainly the pine species long-lived pine , the Nevada stone pine ( Pinus flexilis ), the twist pine ( Pinus contorta ) and the single-leaved pine ( Pinus monophylla ) as well as the juniper species Juniperus osteosperma .
The White Mountains are part of the Inyo National Forests , a national forest .
