history
Since the beginning of the 1860s, many prospectors stayed on the way to the gold fields of California in the Owens Valley, so on July 4, 1862 , an outpost of the US Army was set up on Oak Creek , 4 km north of today's Independence, the camp Independence . Independence was named after this. When Inyo Country was established in 1866, Independence was designated as its administrative seat.
In the 1940s, the Manzanar War Relocation Center , an internment camp for Japanese and Japanese Americans , was set up 10 km south of the town center as part of the internment of Japanese Americans from a restricted zone on the west coast. In mid-1943, over 10,000 people were held there behind barbed wire. Both the Manzanar National Historic Site and the Eastern California Museum in Independence provide information about their fate .
