The Passo San Giovanni is a 287  m slm high mountain pass in the Italian province of Trento .

Location and surroundings

The pass delimits the Monte Bondone - Monte Stivo group in the north from Monte Baldo in the south. It forms the lowest transition from the Adige Valley or Vallagarina , as the lower section of the Adige Valley is also called, into the lower Sarca Valley and the north shore of Lake Garda . The transition lies in the middle of the remains of a landslide , the so-called Marocca di Passo San Giovanni , which arose after a side branch of the Adige Glacier retreated when the decreasing pressure on the mountain slopes caused them to slide. As a result, the passport of the 1950s due to the construction of the dammed east Adige Lake Garda tunnel silted Lake Loppio on.

Aedicule with the statue of St. John Nepomuk

Slightly below the top of the pass, on the southern roadside, on a boulder, a remnant of the Ice Age landslide, there is an aedicule with the statue of St. John Nepomuk , after whom the pass is named. The aedicula, built in 1738, bears a Latin inscription at its base with the year of its erection. On the back is the coat of arms of the donor family from Nago who had the building erected in memory of a deceased person. The statue was badly damaged during World War I , so it had to be partially reconstructed in the 1920s. It is awarded to the baroque sculptor Teodoro , son of Cristoforo Benedetti .

history

The pass has been an important transition from the Adige Valley to Lake Garda and the western half of the Trentino since ancient times. In 1439, during the war with the Viscontis , Venice transported its fleet over the pass in the military operation Galeas per montes .

But also more peace-loving travelers like Johann Wolfgang von Goethe in 1776, described in his travelogue Italian trip , or Michel de Montaigne crossed the pass before him . In 1861 the Mori – Arco – Riva narrow-gauge railway was run over the pass. The Passo San Giovanni was the highest point on the route for the railway, which operated until 1936. During the First World War , the Austro-Hungarian lines ran over the pass and joined those of the Segrom to the south . Some remains of concrete positions are still preserved on the southern roadside.

In the 1930s, the Strada Rivana, now part of the SS 240 Loppio - Val di Ledro , was passed over the pass, which is reminiscent of a memorial stone.
