The Siemens ES64U2 are electric locomotives of the EuroSprinter family made by Siemens Transportation Systems . The locomotives have been operated by the ÖBB since 2000 as series 1016 and 1116 and under the protected name Taurus . The German track has 26 machines of this type (as the class 182), the Hungarian railway company Magyar Államvasutak and Raaberbahn / GySEV they result as the class 470. Hector rail 7 has machinery (as the class 242). There are also numerous locomotives operated by private railway companies in Germany and Austria. A further development of the ES64U2 is the Siemens ES64U4 , which has been in use since 2005 as the ÖBB series 1216. The workshop responsible for all machines ever built is the main workshop of the ÖBB in Linz on the Danube .

History of origin

In the mid-1990s, the ÖBB fleet had a very high average age; with the ÖBB 1110 , ÖBB 1010 or ÖBB 1040 , numerous locomotives were in use that were technically up to date from the 1940s and 1950s. Up until 1995 new traction vehicles were procured in the form of the ÖBB 1044 , but the concept of this series with its series motors was already outdated. At the latest with the serial production of the DB class 120 in 1987 came the breakthrough in three-phase AC technology , which has been the state of the art ever since.

This was also recognized by the ÖBB, so that at the end of the 1980s, the development of three-phase locomotives began. With the locomotives of the ÖBB series 1012 , 1014 and 1822 prototypes for testing three-phase AC technology were procured. However, for various reasons these were unsuitable as universal locomotives that the ÖBB could have procured in large numbers. In the case of the 1012, the unit price of 70 million  schillings (ATS) (corresponding to 5.1 million euros) was enormously high at the time, while the ÖBB no longer considered the two-system locomotive 1822 due to technical complications and at the time unclear possible uses. In the case of the 1014 series, the installed power of just 3.0 MW was too low for use as a high-performance universal locomotive.

For this reason, the ÖBB division set up a project group in June 1996, which had the task of designing new electric traction vehicles in order to be able to renew and rejuvenate the ÖBB fleet over the long term. In December 1996 the tender documents were available, although at that time it was still unclear in what number of new locomotives were to be procured. The offers from the industry were available by February 1997. At this point it was also determined that the order would be split into one and two-system locomotives. Six manufacturers or manufacturer consortia had applied . These were Adtranz , Siemens , Ansaldo , a consortium made up of GEC Alstom and ELIN , a consortium made up of Siemens and Adtranz (former consortium 1012 , at that time still with ELIN, which, however, dropped out shortly before the Taurus was tendered), and a consortium made up of SLM and Adtrance.

After several rounds of discussion and negotiation, the offers of the companies SLM, Ansaldo and those of Arbeitsgemeinschaft 1012 were eliminated for price reasons. For example, the offer from SLM was in the range of ATS 60 million at the time (corresponding to EUR 4.38 million).

The offers from the remaining manufacturers were evaluated according to a point system, with GEC-Alstom being ahead in the two-system vehicles and Adtranz in the single-system vehicles after these initial negotiations. At this point in time, both providers were ahead of Siemens. In July 1997 these three providers were invited to the decision-making body of the ÖBB in order to submit the final offers. The contract was finally awarded to Siemens in the same month, as their offer was 0.8% cheaper than Adtranz's. Alstom was way behind the other two offers. The ÖBB thus ordered 50 single and 25 two-system locomotives from Siemens, combined with an option for a further 325 two-system engines. The price per locomotive was 2.63 million euros, the entire order had a volume of 197 million euros, corresponding to 2.7  billion  ATS.

The first Taurus for ÖBB (1016 001) was officially presented on July 12, 1999 at Krauss-Maffei in Munich-Allach. The locomotives 1016 002 and 003 followed a short time later. All other machines were built in Linz, Austria . From January 2000 the vehicles were in use in Austria, which were initially accepted and registered individually in delivery lots of six vehicles each. On January 18, 2001, the Supreme Railway Authority in Austria officially issued type approval for the vehicles of the 1016 and 1116 series. In Germany, approval was granted by the Federal Railway Authority in June 2000. From March 11th to 17th, 2001, 1116 were registered on the Swiss network, 903 test drives. On April 10, 2002, the ÖBB took over the 100th Taurus locomotive.

Driving ban

After the driver of a freight train hauled by a 1016 observed on July 19, 2000 how a level crossing did not close in front of his train, various irregularities were discovered. On August 3, 2000, DB Netz issued a driving ban for all vehicles of the 1016 series. After technical changes, the driving ban was lifted on September 5, 2000.

The ES 64 U2 was originally developed as a universal locomotive for the Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) and is operated there as the 1016 (pure 15 kV version) and 1116 (two-frequency version for 15 kV and 25 kV for international traffic to Hungary ). It represents the second generation of the EuroSprinter family and is based on the class 152 and class 120 locomotives of Deutsche Bahn AG . The locomotives of the 1116 series are equipped and approved for traction and safety technology for Germany , Austria and Hungary, and their use in Switzerland has been permitted since May 2002 . Due to the existing technology, they are also suitable for the AC lines in the Czech Republic and Slovakia .

The machines of the ES64U2 series are capable of push-pull trains and are equipped with two single-arm pantographs ex works . The first 25 class 1116 locomotives, which were delivered with three pantographs, are an exception. The third pantographs with a wider range were dismantled after a short time, because the Hungarian State Railways adjusted their catenary geometrically, which made them superfluous. For the introduction of the Railjet and the associated trips to Switzerland, the locomotives 1116 201 to 223 intended for this service were again given a third pantograph with a narrower range in accordance with Swiss standards. Later some locomotives were equipped with a third pantograph with a pallet with a width of 1600 mm for the planned use in Croatia.

The locomotives can travel on changes of inclination with a gradient curve from 300 m, peaks from 250 m.

The locomotive is driven by a specially developed hollow shaft drive with a sprung brake shaft (HAB).

Noise development

When switching on from a standing position, a noise can be heard that is reminiscent of playing through a scale on a tenor saxophone . It is created in the three-phase motors by controlling the converters . The noise is twice the clock frequency of the pulse- controlled inverter , which is increased in stages.

The frequency changes in whole and semitone steps over two octaves from d to d ″ in the tone stock of the main tones . It is a Doric scale on the root  D.

This makes it possible that when the wheel sets are thrown (e.g. due to wet rails) a four-part start-up tone is produced.

The successor series ES 64U4 ( ÖBB 1216 / SŽ series 541 ) no longer has this special acoustic feature.

At the ÖBB, the locomotive bears the protected name Taurus (the Latin word for bull - the mythological bull is a symbol of strength). According to the order as universal locomotives, they are used in both heavy freight and fast long-distance traffic, so that the ÖBB could completely retire the series 1110 , 1010 , 1040 , 1041 and 1141 by 2003. A total of 282 dual-system locomotives 1116 and 50 single-system locomotives 1016 were procured.

In the summer of 2008, numerous Taurus locomotives were given an adapted design as an advertising medium for the European Football Championship 2008 , which consisted of the flag and a map of Europe with the position of the respective participating country.

In Austria, rail transport without Taurus locomotives would no longer be imaginable: Almost all long-distance trains ( RJ and IC ), a large part of the freight trains and even some regional express and regional trains are hauled by Taurus locomotives.

The 1116 201 to 251 were adapted for Railjet traffic and painted differently . The technical changes range from equipment with various train control systems (EVM, INTEGRA, ZUB) to the installation of a third pantograph with a narrow contact strip for traffic in Switzerland (1116 201 to 223) to a silver-gray apron between the bogies (1116 201 to 223 ). With it, the locomotives can for the first time travel to a top speed of 230 km / h - provided the route sections traveled are approved for such speeds.

Since the new Lower Inn Valley Railway between Wörgl / Radfeld and Baumkirchen as well as the new Hadersdorf - Tullnerfeld - Wagram Junction ( Westbahn ) were equipped with ETCS Level 2 instead of LZB , all 332 machines were retrofitted with ETCS, mainly due to the two tons higher mass is recognizable.

In Germany, locomotives can be found in front of freight and long-distance trains, mainly between Passau and Ingolstadt / Hamburg or between Salzburg and Frankfurt / Main. Since December 2008, 20 locomotives with the appropriate foils have been running for Rail Cargo Hungaria , currently these are 1116 001 to 012, 014, 015, 041 and 045 to 049. Since 2005 and 2009, the 1116 058 to 061 and 063 to 065 have been on which GySEV rents. In addition, some 1,116 freight trains have been scheduled to be found in Romania and Bulgaria for a few years now. Since mid-2014, they have even come cross-country skiing with a container train from Duisburg via Sopron to the Turkish border station at Kapikule .

At the end of 2005 the locomotives of the 1014 series of the CAT trains were replaced by those of the 1116 series, as the former had to struggle with a high susceptibility to damage. For this use, the 1116 141 and 142 were painted in a modified design, which was changed again at the end of 2011. In mid-2013 it was decided to replace these two locomotives with single-system locomotives of the 1016 series. The 1016 014 and 036 also received the CAT design. Since then, the two green / gray 1116 have operated in different plans. In the course of repairs to the deadline, they were given a new red paint at the end of 2013 and mid-2014.

ÖBB has been working on approval of the 1116 series in Croatia since 2014. It was planned to station several locomotives in Zagreb, which should run on freight trains between Hungary and the port in Rijeka. Because of the smaller contact wire lateral deflection, the 1116 021 was equipped with a third pantograph with a pallet with a width of 1600 mm at the beginning of 2014. Since then, this locomotive has been used in Croatia for certification runs. At the end of 2014, all 1116 registered in Romania and Bulgaria also received a third pantograph for Croatia. In October 2016, Rail Cargo Hungaria started the scheduled use of this series in Croatia, initially with the three locomotives 1116 021-023.

Furthermore, for a long time, approval of the 1116 in Slovakia was sought, primarily to be able to haul freight trains to the Bratislava-Východ station in the east of the city. Due to problems with the interference currents (including errors in track vacancy detection systems and switch-on contacts for railway barriers ), which had to be solved, it took until October 2014 for the 1116 041-049 to be granted approval in Slovakia. In November 2015, 1116 049 hauled a RailCargoGroup freight train in Slovakia for the first time in its own traction . Regular use only began on November 19, 2018 with the formal rental of the 1116 041 to RailCargoCarrier Slovakia . Since then, this locomotive has been used in Slovakia in front of RCC-SK freight trains.

In 2016, the 1116 152, 154, 155 and 156 were redesigned for use with the reordered Railjet sets, but this time they were not converted to LED headlights. The 1116 157-160 were painted in traffic red or with advertising stickers (Jointly Safe, Light in the Dark Star Campaign, 150 Years of the Brenner Railway) also briefly used in front of Railjet trains. In the meantime, however, these four locomotives have been replaced by ÖBB 1216 for service in Italy and are thus used again in the conventional 1116 circulation.

Due to the expansion of the own traction service of the ÖBB freight transport subsidiary RailCargoGroup, the area of ​​operation abroad is also constantly growing. As of 2018, around 10 class 1016 locomotives were formally leased to RailCargoGermany, where they mainly hauled block trains between Ingolstadt and Bremerhaven. After about a year these locomotives returned to Austria because the services to be provided in Germany had been reduced.

Accidents

On the evening of February 6, 2007, on the Budapest - Hegyeshalom railway line between Almásfüzítő and Komárom, a rear-end collision occurred between a freight train and the EURegio 9438, which was running from Tatabánya to Vienna Südbahnhof (east) and was hauled by the 1116 017. Due to a fault in the safety technology, it was necessary to drive on sight. In contrast to the locomotive driver of the freight train, that of the EURegio did not, which is why he hit the end of the freight train at almost 100 km / h. The last car, a flat car , split the box from the frame up to the middle of the locomotive, the penultimate car of the freight train completely destroyed the locomotive above the frame in this area. This accident claimed one human life (train driver of the EURegio) and four injured. On February 22nd, 2007 the 1116 017 was transferred to Austria. The damaged locomotive was scrapped in the main workshop in Linz after usable parts had been removed. It was subsequently decided to order three replacement locomotive sets from Siemens, one of which was used to rebuild the 1116 017. On December 7th, 2009 the 1116 017 II had its acceptance journeys between St. Valentin and Linz.

On May 18, 2007 shortly before 11 a.m., the 1116 062 rented to GySEV unrolled from the Tarvisio Boscoverde train station in the direction of Austria. Before that, she had been pushed away by the Italian shunting team from direct current to alternating current due to an understanding problem, even though the driver was not yet on the Taurus. The locomotive then rolled into the entry area of ​​the Villach Fürnitz marshalling yard, where it derailed in an arc at around 140 km / h, overturned and came to a standstill damaged in the adjacent forest. Nobody was injured because the only train going to Italy at that time, EC 31, could be notified and stopped in good time.

In the main workshop in Linz, usable parts were removed from the locomotive before it was scrapped. As a replacement, a second of the three replacement locomotive sets ordered from Siemens was completed with replacement parts in Linz and returned to traffic as 1116 062 II. Immediately after the accident, GySEV received a replacement in the form of 1116 060.

On the night of June 16-17, 2010, a serious train accident occurred on the Arlbergbahn with a Taurus involved. The 1116 173 was on the way with the freight train 46676 (full car train, consisting of 16 two-part transport wagons, loaded with 208 new Dacia wagons , on the way from Romania to France) when near the Wald am Arlberg station between the two halves of the first wagon the safety rope that holds the main air duct over the top edge of the rail loosened. A few kilometers later, the main air duct, which was hanging down, hit rails on the track, separating the duct and bending it back so that no air could escape. Now only the locomotive and the first half of the two-part first car could brake, and that with a gradient of up to 31 ‰.

When the engine driver noticed the extreme reduction in braking power, he correctly pressed the emergency stop button. Shortly after 3 a.m., the last five wagons derailed in a left-hand curve in front of the Braz train station at a speed of around 125 km / h (permitted: 60 km / h), fell down the embankment and came to rest in front of a residential building. In the next right curve, in the area of ​​the first switch of the Braz station, the 1116 173 and the first eight wagons also fell down the embankment and also came to rest in the garden in front of a residential building. There was property damage of around seven million euros. Apart from the seriously injured train driver, there were no other injuries to complain about.

The badly damaged locomotive was sheltered in Bludenz for a long time before it was transferred to the main workshop in Linz. In mid-2014, the new building 1116 173 II, which was built using the third and last reserve box, went into operation.

On the evening of December 23, 2013, locomotive 1116 212, which hauled the RJ 165 from Zurich to Budapest , collided with a broken down car near Győr on the level crossing. The locomotive caught fire immediately, the front driver's cab burned out completely, the electronics of the locomotive were largely damaged.

On the evening of August 1, 2014 shortly before 9 p.m., the locomotive 1116 074 collided with the EuroCity 216, which was on its way from Graz to Saarbrücken, at low speed in the station area of Mannheim's main train station . Two EuroCity cars fell on their side, injuring 35 people, four of whom were seriously injured. The locomotive was supposed to bring a freight train from Duisburg to Sopron and derailed, but remained upright and apparently suffered only minor damage.

The Austrian authorities refused the approval of the DB class 152 in Austria in 2001 because the track forces that occurred were assessed as too high. For this reason, Deutsche Bahn AG converted the order for the last 25 locomotives of the DB class 152 into 25 machines of the DB class 182, which corresponds to the ÖBB class 1116; However, the third pantograph, which is common with the 1116 in its original state, was dispensed with; retrofitting would be possible with little effort.

At Deutsche Bahn, since the handover of the first locomotive in July 2001, the locomotives, like the 152 series, have been assigned to the DB Cargo division. This means that the locomotive with the highest top speed (230 km / h) was used by Deutsche Bahn AG in an area where it is not needed. As a result of the financial and economic crisis, the transport volumes at Railion fell so sharply in 2009 that the rail freight division had an overhang of locomotives. In addition, other locomotives of the DB class 185 had meanwhile received approval for Austria, so that the original purpose could also be covered elsewhere. In autumn 2009, a deployment at DB Regio in various regions of Germany was therefore considered and in some cases also tested.

Since the timetable change in December 2009, five of the locomotives have been running on the Cottbus – Leipzig line as a replacement for Talent 2 electric local railcars , which were not yet approved due to quality defects. Locomotives of this series were also used on RB line 20 (Eisenach-Erfurt-Halle (Saale)) in Thuringia from December 2010 to December 2015. Since December 2014, these trains have been running exclusively with leased locomotives of the 182 series from MRCE , as the two regional machines 182 024 and 025 have been relocated to Cottbus. Compared to the locomotives of the DB class 143 previously used there , the susceptibility to delays was reduced by increasing the speed to 140 km / h and the much faster acceleration. Between June and December 2010, locomotives of the class 182 were also used as planned for the first time in a three-day circuit in DB long-distance traffic, after there had been a brief operation in 2009 before the weekend IC on the Cologne-Hamburg route.

From December 2010, eight DB Regio locomotives were to be used on the S1 line of the Dresden S-Bahn in order to also shorten travel times there. Class 145 locomotives were used until all locomotives were fully available (equipped with a local transport package, train driver training) . On August 15, 2011, the first locomotive was used in regular service, the main area of ​​application of the vehicles was the S-Bahn line S1 (Meißen-Triebischtal – Schöna), but also used as a replacement for the 442 series on the RE50 Saxonia Express on the Relations between Dresden and Leipzig were the rule. As of December 13, 2015, the eight Dresden locomotives (182 016 to 023) were handed over to the Magdeburg-Buckau depot. The machines in Dresden were also replaced by eight class 146.0 locomotives . In September 2016, two of the former Dresden locomotives (182 018 and 020) were again used in Dresden S-Bahn traffic on the S2 S-Bahn line.

The machines 182 016 to 023, which have been in use from the Magdeburg-Buckau station since December 13, 2015, found their way to the combined S-Bahn line S2 from Leipzig-Connewitz via Leipzig Hbf (low), Delitzsch, Bitterfeld to Dessau and beyond until the beginning of August 2016 Regional train RB42 via Roßlau (Elbe), Güterglück and Biederitz to Magdeburg Hbf a new area of ​​operation. They ran there with three double-decker coaches from the "Elbe-Saale-Bahn" as a replacement for class 442 railcars that had not yet been delivered for the Central German S-Bahn network II .

The vehicles that have been running on the Cottbus - Falkenberg / Elster - Leipzig route since the end of 2009 were replaced by class 143 locomotives again from December 2011 and have since been running on the RE2 line from Cottbus via Berlin to Wittenberge / Wismar. After only one year, the locomotives were withdrawn from the RE2 and have been running since then with five modernized double-decker cars on the RE1 line from Cottbus via Frankfurt (Oder), Berlin, Potsdam and Brandenburg (Havel) to Magdeburg Hbf, in accordance with the customer's specifications ( Verkehrsverbund Berlin-Brandenburg ). The Cottbus inventory includes machines 182 001 to 006, 008, 010 to 015, with retroactive effect from August 10, 2016, as well as 182 024 and 025, which were added from Erfurt in December 2014. In addition to covering the trains for the RegionalExpress line RE1 also covering the daily IRE trains on the route Berlin Ostbahnhof - Uelzen - Hamburg Hbf.

Since August 2016, the eight machines that are no longer required at DB Regio Südost in Magdeburg have been handed over to the Northeast region, so that all machines of this series will find a home in this regional area for the time being. Currently, the relocation of some machines to the Rostock station is being prepared and carried out, the 182 007 was relocated to Rostock for training purposes on February 3, 2015, followed by the 182 009 on August 10, 2016, more machines are to follow shortly.

In order to be able to cover all of the aforementioned Talent 2 replacement transports, all 25 BR 182 machines were transferred to the DB Regio portfolio in the course of 2011 . For services in passenger train traffic, the locomotives received approval with ep brakes and emergency brake bridging (NBÜ 2004), which led to the expiry of the approval on the ÖBB-Infrastruktur AG network - the original purpose of their acquisition. All 25 locomotives were retrofitted with a local transport package, which mainly consists of side-selective door control (SAT / TAV) and a passenger information system. As the last machine in its series, the 182 024 entered the manufacturing plant in Munich-Allach on October 5, 2011.

As the 26th DB locomotive, the 182 506 has belonged to DB Systemtechnik since 2013 and is used in front of RAILab measuring trains.

Another 60 locomotives of this type belong to the Dispolok pool and are rented to various railway companies, including a. to NetLog / boxXpress.de , HKX , Hupac AG , Rail4captrain , RBH Logistics and TX Logistik .

Hupac decided very quickly to buy the locomotive rented from Siemens and also acquired two more.

DB Fernverkehr has had a shortage of high-speed locomotives for intercity traffic since 2009 . Although the then sister company DB Schenker Rail (now DB Cargo ) did not need its 25 Siemens ES64 U2s during the financial and economic crisis of 2009, DB Fernverkehr also rents the locomotives from MRCE and has since referred to them internally as the 117 series. There were only four at the beginning of 2009 Locomotives, the company rented 17 locomotives at the beginning of 2010.

The Hungarian MÁV owns ten locomotives there, designated as 470 (previously 1047 ). The first machine was delivered in March 2002. Although the machines are also approved for Austria and Germany, they represent a special case under the ES64 U2, as MÁV explicitly waived the installation of an LZB and the locomotives in Austria and Germany are approved for a maximum speed of 230 km / h , but due to the lack of LZB and ETCS equipment, the leading vehicle is only allowed to drive 160 km / h. The 470 010 is currently carrying advertising films from “ Aranycsapat ”.

470.5 (formerly 1047.5 ) is the name of the Hungarian-Austrian GySEV for its five machines, which, however, do not have the special features of the MÁV machines. Five 1116 series ÖBB locomotives have been running for GySEV since 2005. Originally these were 1116 061 to 065, after a total write-off of 1116 062 (unrolled in Tarvisio, derailed in Villach Fürnitz), the 1116 060 was rented to Hungary as a replacement. In 2009, the next two high-performance locomotives for the GySEV followed with the 1116 058 and 059. The rental contract ended in mid-December 2015 and the rented Tauri returned to ÖBB. Similar to the ÖBB locomotives, the GySEV also covers its Taurus locomotives with advertising film, so the 470 501 175 years of Empress Sisi , the 503 125 years of Liszt , the 504 Joseph Haydn and the 505 István Széchenyi were / can be admired in Austria and Hungary.

Hector Rail

The Swedish Hector Rail owns seven locomotives built between 2000 and 2002, which are referred to there as the 242 series. These locomotives are ETCS Level 2 and dual frequency capable (15 kV, 16.7 Hz / 25 kV, 50 Hz), they have been bought in several batches by MRCE since 2010. They are approved for Germany and Austria, as well as Sweden before. For use in Sweden, the locomotives were equipped with the appropriate train control systems, but locomotives used in Sweden could not operate in Germany during this time. In 2018 the HectoRail-Taurus in Sweden were replaced by the newly acquired Vectron (Hector series 243). The locomotives equipped for Sweden were again equipped with the train control devices for Germany and Austria, they have been in use again in Germany and Austria since then. The locomotives in their current condition (August 2019) cannot easily be used again in Sweden. In addition to a series designation and number, the locomotives also have a name that is easy to remember, e.g. E.g .: "Lightyear". In addition to freight transport, the Hectorrail locomotives were also used to transport various private long-distance trains, such as the Snallenåget in Sweden and, at the beginning, the Locomore and Flixtrain long-distance trains in Germany.

The Flixmobility company uses a Siemens Taurus in the corporate colors as a locomotive for its passenger coaches used on the Cologne – Hamburg route. Flixtrain has been using the route since March 24, 2018.

Former use

The Nord-Ostsee-Bahn hauled the Flensburg-Express between Hamburg and Padborg with Taurus locomotives of the ÖBB from 2002 to 2005 .

From the start of operation of Abellio on the RB 40 of the VRR in December 2005 came ES64 U2 of Siemens Dispolok used, which in the summer of 2007 successively from Stadler Flirt were replaced. Regular locomotives (SDL standard paint with Abellio stickers) were the ES64 U2-045, -046 and -047, which were supplemented or replaced by the ES64 U2-095 in 2007.

When the Meridian started operating , two ES64 U2s from Siemens Dispolok ran as a push- pull train with four Metronom Dosto cars .

Further developments

A further development of the locomotive is the Siemens ES64U4 , which is designed as a three-system universal locomotive for 15 and 25 kV AC and 3 kV DC voltage, but can also be built as a four-system locomotive if required. Arriva procured a pure two-frequency variant as class 183 for the ALEX traffic, which however contains all other improvements.

From the end of 2005 five locomotives were equipped with train control systems for Bulgaria, Turkey, Serbia and Croatia.
