Rail4Captrain GmbH (R4C) (formerly Rail4chem Eisenbahnverkehrgesellschaft mbH ) is a private German railway company that deals with the transport of goods by rail. This company has developed into a small group of companies under the leadership of the German Rail4chem GmbH based in Essen. With the transition from R4C to Captrain Germany , the company headquarters were initially relocated to Dortmund and in 2017 to Berlin.

Rail4chem transalpin, based in Basel (CH), remains the only subsidiary. The core business of the group is the traction of freight trains in Europe. Former R4C subsidiaries are today's Captrain Benelux BV (formerly Rail4chem Benelux BV) in Rotterdam (NL) and Fer Polska SA in Warsaw (PL).

history

In 2000, the Rail4chem railway mbH was joint venture of the companies BASF , Bertschi based in Dürrenäsch (CH), Hoyer and VTG AG founded (located both in Hamburg).

After a seven-month founding phase, the company officially started operations on March 9, 2001 in Ludwigshafen. Since then, the railway company has carried out freight transport services on national and international routes. The EVU started out as an industrial railway for the chemical industry. The first tasks included, for example, the chemical transport from Ruhland to Ludwigshafen as well as from and to Aachen with handover to the Belgian state railway SNCB / NMBS .

At the beginning of 2003 the company announced a cooperation with TX Logistik and Duisburger Hafen AG . Together with other railway companies, a new hub was to be built in Duisburg and from there new relations for cross-border traffic should be opened up. On February 12, 2003, operations began on a new block train connection to Poland.

In the meantime, R4C has developed into a cross-sector provider of complex rail services. In February 2008 it was announced that the company had been sold to the French Veolia group . The parties have agreed not to disclose the purchase price; According to information from the Financial Times Germany , it should be between 30 and 40 million euros. Since then, however, the Veolia Group's logistics activities (under the name of Veolia Cargo) have been sold to the French state railway SNCF , which is the ultimate owner of the R4C Group via Captrain Germany . In March 2012 the name was changed to Rail4Captrain.

The R4C vehicle fleet consists primarily of 14 electric locomotives of the type Bombardier TRAXX F140 AC , identical to the DB class 185.0. There are also three of the newer Traxx F140 AC2 and three older locomotives, identical in construction to the DB class 145 . The electric locomotive fleet is supplemented by two Siemens ES64U2s , former SBB Re 4/4 I and SBB Ae 4/7 . The latter are Swiss locomotives that are over 75 years old. A DR series E 94 was also used at times.

For non-electrified routes, especially in the Netherlands, there are some diesel locomotives available, some of which still come from the Dutch provider Short Lines , which they took over . There are a total of eight EMD JT42CWR ( Class 66 ), three of them in the current, five-door version and ten Vossloh G 2000 BB (two Type 1, eight Type 3). Furthermore, four MaK G 1206 are available.
