Hegyeshalom [ ˈhɛɟɛʃhɒlom ] (German: Straß-Sommerein ) is a large Hungarian municipality in Győr-Moson-Sopron County with an area of 52.66 km² and 3526 inhabitants (2001 census). The place is on the border between Hungary and Austria .

geography

Hegyeshalom is located in the Little Hungarian Plain in northwest Hungary . It has a border crossing to Nickelsdorf in Austria.

history

The Hungarian parish was first mentioned in 1217. The document referred to the Szűz Mária Templom (Church of St. Mary ), which was located on a hill. After the war against the Turks the community was settled by Germans . At the 1941 census, about 1,800 of the 3,550 inhabitants were still Germans, most of whom were expelled in 1945 and 1946. The connection to the Vienna – Budapest railway line in 1863 meant an upswing. In addition to the predominantly rural and German population, a Magyar part of the population moved in, who mainly found employment in the railway sector.

In April 1989 the Soviet Union , then ruled by Mikhail Gorbachev , began withdrawing its troops from western Hungary; they want to create “a zone of trust along the border”. In the village of Hegyeshalom, Hungarian soldiers and locals began to dismantle the Iron Curtain on May 2, 1989 .

About two months later, the foreign ministers of Austria and Hungary, Gyula Horn and Alois Mock , symbolically severed the rest of the border fence near the town of Sopron in northwestern Hungary.
