Jánossomorja ( German St. Johann auf dem Heideboden , Croatian Šomierja ) is a town in Hungary in Győr-Moson-Sopron County near the border with Austria ( Andau border crossing approx. 5 km away), as well as the city of Mosonmagyaróvár (approx. 13 km) . It has almost 6,000 inhabitants (as of 2011) and consists of the three districts Mosonszentjános ( St. Johann ), Mosonszentpéter ( St. Peter ) and Pusztasomorja ( Wüst-Sommerein ), which were combined to form the city of Jánossomorja in 1970. The first two districts were predominantly German populated until 1945 while Pusztasomorja was a Hungarian language island.
In 2009 Jánossomorja celebrated its 800th anniversary.
