history

Refugees in Budapest Ostbahnhof on September 4th, 2015

The in neo-Renaissance style built railway terminus was in between 1881 and 1884 by the railway engineers János Feketeházy and the architect Gyula Rochlitz planned and built.

When it opened, it was considered to be one of the most modern train stations in Central Europe , as it was one of the first to have electrical lighting and a central signal box . In 1998 the facade was restored.

Since the opening of metro line 4 in March 2014, the station has also been a crossing and transfer point for the subway. In the course of this, the station forecourt and parts of the interior of the station were rebuilt or renovated in previous years.

In the course of the refugee crisis in Europe in 2015 , the train station was in the focus of public attention at the end of August / beginning of September 2015, when several thousand refugees were at times in and around the station area to catch a train to Austria or Germany. The Hungarian police cordoned off the train station for a short time to prevent the refugees from leaving the country without permission.
