The Budapesti Helyiérdekű Vasút ( BHÉV ), also often referred to as Helyiérdekű Vasút ( HÉV ) for short , is a S-Bahn -like transport system in Hungary . It connects the capital Budapest with its suburbs in the surrounding area. Until 2016 it was in the municipal Budapest public transport company BKV Zrt. integrated, since then it has belonged to MÁV-HÉV Zrt, which is part of the Hungarian State Railways.
The route network, which covers a total of 103.7 kilometers, consists of four operationally separate routes, all of which begin in Budapest. They lead to Szentendre in the north, Gödöllő in the east, Ráckeve and the island of Csepel in the south. One route branches out further on, so that the network is served by a total of five lines . They are designated as H5 to H9 following the four lines of the Budapest Metró (M1 to M4).
The suburban trains do not go to the city center, but rather end on the outskirts, from where underground, tram , trolleybus or bus lines continue to the center. The line from Gödöllő ends at Örs vezér tere in eastern Budapest, where there is a transition to the M2 underground line. The closest train station to the city center is Batthyány tér.
Originally, these were lines licensed as local railways, which also carried out freight traffic . On the route to Szentendre, for example, this was the case until 1997. For this purpose, the four suburban railway lines are linked at four points with the railway network of the Hungarian state railway Magyar Államvasutak (MÁV), where the freight wagons were previously handed over:
- H5: Kaszásdűlő (HÉV) <> Óbuda (MÁV)
- H6: Kén utca (HÉV) <> Soroksári út (MÁV)
- H7: Szabadkikötő (HÉV) <> Soroksári út (MÁV)
- H8 / H9: Örs vezér tere (HÉV) <> Kőbánya-Teher (MÁV)
The connecting tracks, which are not electrified due to the different power systems, still serve to exchange vehicles between the four operating parts and are bridged by diesel locomotives . Furthermore, there was a direct track connection between the H5 and Line 1 of the Budapest tram network at the Filatorigát freight station until the 1990s.
history
The BHÉV was founded before the Second World War as a merger of several transport companies. During the socialist era, it became state property and was merged with the state railway MÁV for a short time in the 1950s. Since the 1960s it has been part of the BKV, which also operates all other local transport in Budapest.
