Csepel [ tʃɛpɛl ] ( German  Tschepele or Eugene Island , Croatian Čepeljski Otok or Ada ) is an island in the Danube in Hungary , in the north from the south end of Budapest to the community Makád - Tass ranges in the south. The Lakihegy transmitter is located on the island .

geography

Csepel is located in central Hungary and extends from Budapest to Tass. The island has an area of 257 square kilometers, with a length of 48 kilometers. It divides the Danube into a main and a secondary artery. Hungarians call the former “Great Danube” (Hungarian Nagy-Duna ), the latter “Little Danube” (Hungarian Kis-Duna ). There is a lock to regulate the water level in the Kis-Duna at both the northern and southern ends of the island . The northern part of the island has belonged to Budapest since the early 1950s and forms the 21st municipal district.

Infrastructure

The island is most densely populated in the northern part, known as XXI. Budapest district belongs to the capital. In addition, there are smaller towns and communities further south. The most important are Ráckeve , Tököl , Halásztelek and Szigetszentmiklós . On the eastern side of Csepel, where the Little Danube flows, is the Gubacsi Bridge . This eastern part is mainly used for leisure activities. Here you will find numerous fishing opportunities and water sports clubs. The most common are kayaking and rowing . Csepel has its own suburban railway line (ung. Helyiérdekű Vasút (HÉV) ), which runs from Budapest to Ráckeve.

On the island of Csepel there is also the Lakihegy transmitter , the mast of which is the tallest structure in Hungary.

Industry

The largest industrial plant dates back to before socialism and was then the factory of Manfréd Weiss . The plant was later nationalized. Csepel was thus a stronghold of the working class. In the "iron and metal works Csepel" (ung. Csepel Vas- és Fémművek ), among other things, motorcycles, bicycles and trucks were manufactured. See → main article: Vehicle manufacturer Csepel .

Nevertheless, Csepel is not a downright industrial area . Due to its favorable location close to the capital, a free port on the Great Danube was built in Csepel .
