Szigetszentmiklós (German: Nigglau ) is a town in Pest County, Hungary . It is located south of Budapest on the island of Csepel in the Danube and includes, among other things, the Lakihegy transmitter . Szigetszentmiklós was first mentioned in a document in 1264, and it received city rights in 1986.
Naming
The name essentially consists of two parts: Sziget stands for island in Hungarian , which means the Csepel, and Szent Miklós stands for Saint Nicholas , the patron saint of the city. The German name Nigglau is also a modification of Nikolaus.
Demographics
In 2003 the population of Szigetszentmiklós consisted of 91.3% Hungarians, 0.6% Germans, 0.6% Slovaks, 0.5% Roma, 0.2% Bulgarians and 0.1% Ukrainians.
35.9% of the total population were Roman Catholic, 2.2% Greek Catholic, 21.4% Calvinist, 1% Evangelical Lutheran, 20.7% without religion, 2.1% other.
