About three kilometers away, the “station village ” (Finnish: Asemakylä ) has grown around the Haukapudas train station on the Oulu- Tornio line . Haukapudas also includes the fishing villages of Halosenniemi and Kivinniemi as well as the inland towns of Santaholma, Ukonkaivos, Martinniemi, Onkamo, Holstinmäki, Häyrysenniemi, Jokikylä, Kalimeenkylä, Kello, Parkumäki, Takkuranta and Virpiniemi.

Until recently, agriculture, forestry and fishing were the main industries, but Haukipudas has developed into a high-tech location in recent decades; one of the largest employers is the factory of the telecommunications group Sanmina SCI .

Culture and sights

The main attraction is the wooden church of the Protestant parish. Its free-standing bell tower was built in 1751, the church building itself in the years 1762–64. Several well-preserved works by the church painter Mikael Toppelius can be found in its interior , including a representation of the Last Supper (1779). On the outer wall of the church tower is a vaivaisukko (around 1850) typical of the Österbotten landscape , an offering box in the form of a life-size man statue asking for alms for the poor with an outstretched hand. The mild gifts are conveyed through a slit in the wooden beggar's chest.
