Riitta-Liisa Roponen , b. Lassila (born May 6, 1978 in Haukipudas ) is a Finnish cross-country skier .

Career

Roponen started for the first time in November 1998 in Muonio in the cross-country skiing world cup and finished 70th place over 5 km freestyle. At the beginning of the 2001/02 season she got her first World Cup points in Kuopio with 22nd place over 10 km classic and 14th place over 5 km freestyle. In the further course of the season she came in Nove Mesto with the seventh place over 5 km freestyle for the first time under the top ten in the World Cup and one day later achieved her first podium in the World Cup with third place together with Riikka Sirviö in the team sprint. At her first Olympic participation in Salt Lake City in 2002 , she achieved 36th place in the sprint, 19th place in the 15 km mass start race and seventh place in the relay. At the beginning of the following season, she took ninth place over 5 km freestyle in Kiruna and thus her best individual World Cup result of the season. At the World Cup in Kuusamo , she came in second place with the mixed relay. At the 2003 World Championships in Val di Fiemme , she finished 41st in the 10 km double pursuit race and 35th in the 30 km freestyle. She has been married to her trainer Toni Roponen since 2003 . After the birth of her daughter in 2004, she again took part in the World Cup in Gällivare at the beginning of the 2004/05 season . There she achieved 17th place over 10 km classic and second place with the relay. This was followed by three seventh places in the individual season. At the 2005 World Championships in Oberstdorf , she and Pirjo Manninen won silver in the team sprint. At the end of the season she won her first World Cup victory together with the relay team in Falun and reached 16th place in the overall World Cup and 14th place in the Distance World Cup. At the beginning of the following season she took third place with the relay in Beitostølen . In January 2006 in Lago di Tesero she achieved her best individual World Cup result to date with fourth place in the 15 km mass start race. A day later she won with the relay (together with Aino-Kaisa Saarinen , Virpi Kuitunen and Kaisa Varis ). Her best placings at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin were 13th in the pursuit race and seventh in the relay. At the World Cup in Sapporo , she finished second in the team sprint with Pirjo Manninen. In the 2006/07 season she came in all 12 individual World Cup participations in the points and seven times in the top ten. At the start of the season in Gällivare, she took third place with the relay. At the World Cup in La Clusaz , she took second place in the 15 km mass start race, her first World Cup podium in an individual race. She finished the first Tour de Ski in 13th place overall. At the subsequent World Cup in Rybinsk , she won her first individual World Cup race in the 15 km mass start race. In February 2007 she won second place with the relay in Davos . At the Nordic World Ski Championships 2007 in Sapporo, she won a gold medal in the freestyle team sprint (together with Virpi Kuitunen) and with the relay. At the following World Cup in Lahti , she took second place in the sprint. At the end of the season she came in second place with the relay in Falun and reached sixth place in the overall and distance world cup.

At the beginning of the 2007/08 season , Roponen came in third place with the relay in Beitostølen and in third place in the 15 km mass start race in Rybinsk . At the Tour de Ski 2007/08 she reached tenth place overall. In February 2008, she took second place with the relay in Falun . At the end of the season she took third place in the 2.5 km freestyle in Bormio . She finished the season in 13th place in the overall World Cup and 11th in the Distance World Cup. The following season she finished second at the World Cup in Gällivare and first place with the relay in La Clusaz . The Tour de Ski 2008/09 she finished in 11th place. At the Nordic World Ski Championships in Liberec in 2009 , she won gold with the relay. At the World Cup final in Falun, where she won the 10 km pursuit stage, she came in tenth place overall and reached 11th place in the overall and distance World Cups. In 2009 she became the Finnish champion in the pursuit race and over 30 km. In the following season she came in all 11 individual participations in the World Cup in the points and seven times in the top ten. At the first World Cup of the season in Beitostølen she came in third place with the relay. At the Tour de Ski 2009/10 she came in sixth. She took second place in the final stage. In January 2010 she became Finnish champion over 5 km and, as in the previous year, in the pursuit race. At the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver , Roponen won the bronze medal together with Virpi Kuitunen , Pirjo Muranen and Aino-Kaisa Saarinen in the relay competition over 4 × 5 km. In the World Cup finals , she finished fifth, ending the season in seventh place in the overall World Cup and fifth in the Distance World Cup. In the 2010/11 season she reached 13th place at the Nordic Opening in Kuusamo and 11th place at the Tour de Ski 2010/11 . In nine individual participations in the World Cup, she came three times in the top ten and nine times in the points. At the Nordic World Ski Championships 2011 in Oslo , she won the bronze medal with the relay. She finished the season in 14th place in the overall World Cup and ninth place in the Distance World Cup. At the beginning of the following season she took third place in Sjusjøen with the relay and 17th place at the Nordic Opening in Kuusamo. The Tour de Ski 2011/12 she finished as last year to 11th place. In January 2012 she became the Finnish Pursuit Champion in Keuruu . The following month she took second place with the relay in Nove Mesto . At the World Cup finals , she came 11th and thus reached 15th place in the overall World Cup and 12th place in the Distance World Cup.

In the 2012/13 season Roponen came in 21st place at the Nordic Opening and eighth place in the Tour de Ski 2012/13 . At the World Cup in La Clusaz she reached second place with the relay. At the 2013 World Championships in Val di Fiemme , she took 16th place in the skiathlon , eighth place over 10 km freestyle and fifth place with the relay. Also that season she won the Engadin Skimarathon and La Sgambeda . She finished the season in 18th place in the overall World Cup, 16th in the Distance World Cup and sixth place in the overall ranking of the Cross-Country Marathon Cup . In the following season she came 41st at the Nordic Opening and 16th at the Tour de Ski 2013/14 . As in the previous year, the Engadin Skimarathon and La Sgambeda won the Cross-Country Skiing Marathon Cup . She also won the Dolomitenlauf and won the overall ranking of the Cross-Country Skiing Marathon Cup. In February 2014 she reached the 26th place in the 30 km mass start race at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi . At the beginning of the 2014/15 season , she finished 39th at the Nordic Opening in Lillehammer . A week later, she won La Sgambeda for the third time in a row. In January 2015, she came third in the skiathlon at the World Cup in Rybinsk . In the same month she became Finnish champion over 10 km. The following month she won the bronze medal with the relay at the 2015 Nordic World Ski Championships in Falun . Her best individual result was eighth place in the skiathlon. At the Engadin Skimarathon in March 2015, she came second behind Anouk Faivre Picon . In May 2015 she won the Icelandic Fossavatn Ski Marathon over 50 km classic. After finishing 20th at the Nordic Opening in Ruka at the beginning of the 2015/16 season, she came third with the relay in January 2016 in Nové Město . At the end of January 2016, she was second in the Finnish championships in Imatra over 10 km freestyle. In the following month she won the Finlandia-hiihto over 42 km freestyle and over 42 km classic and achieved her best individual placement of the season in the World Cup with fifth place in the skiathlon in Lahti . In December 2016 she was second with the relay in La Clusaz and in January 2018 she was Finnish champion over 10 km freestyle in Hakunila . At the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang , she ran in 20th place over 10 km freestyle and fourth in the relay.

In the 2018/19 season, Roponen was third in the relay at the World Cup in Beitostølen and Ulricehamn . In addition, she won the Gsieser Tal-Lauf over 42 km freestyle. At the season highlight, the 2019 World Championships in Seefeld in Tirol , she finished 22nd in the 30 km mass start race and sixth in the relay.
