Kikkan Randall (born December 31, 1982 in Salt Lake City ) is an American cross-country skier . With winning the silver medal in the sprint competition of the Nordic World Ski Championships in Liberec in 2009 and the gold medal in the team sprint of the Nordic World Ski Championships 2013 in Val di Fiemme , top ten placings at the Winter Olympics and World Junior Championships and twelve World Cup victories , she is the most successful US American Cross-country skier of all time.

life and career

Randall was an active athlete in her youth . The middle-distance runner began to use cross-country skiing as a training method in winter. The niece of two Olympic participants in cross-country skiing quickly achieved her first successes on a national level, so that she began to specialize in cross-country skiing.

At her second Junior World Championships in 2001 in Karpacz , Poland , the sprint specialist finished sixth when Pirjo Manninen won. This is the best result that an American cross-country skier has ever achieved at the Junior World Championships. In the same year she took part in the Nordic World Ski Championships for the first time . In Lahti , however, she failed in the qualification and was only 34. In January 2001, she ran her first World Cup race in Soldier Hollow , which she finished in 24th place in the sprint. In 2002 she was an Olympian in her native Salt Lake City. But here, too, she missed the finals in the sprint competition as 44th in qualification.

In the 2004/05 season, Randall, who was previously only active in the Continental Cup or American racing series, started in the Cross-Country World Cup. Over the 10 kilometer freestyle , the sprinter took 70th and last place in Reit im Winkl . At the Nordic World Ski Championships in Oberstdorf in 2005 , as in previous major events, she missed the finals in the sprint competition. A year later, however, at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin , she made it to the semifinals and achieved ninth place, the best result ever for a US cross-country skier at the Winter Olympics. A short time later, with fifth place in the sprint in Borlänge, Sweden, she made it into the top ten of a World Cup competition for the first time.

On January 21, 2007, Randall reached the sprint in Rybinsk, Russia, the first podium finish of a US athlete in the cross-country skiing world cup. A year later she was able to improve this ranking at the same location. After an intermediate sprint on the last mountain, she did not allow her competitors to catch up with her in the freestyle sprint and celebrated her first victory in the World Cup. After placing twelfth place in the overall ranking of all sprint competitions of the Cross-Country Skiing World Cup in 2007, she reached 15th place in 2008. In the 2008/09 season Randall showed after initially moderate results in Otepää , Rybinsk and Valdidentro ascending form. At the Nordic World Ski Championships in Liberec in 2009 , she achieved the greatest success of her career up to then. In the final of the sprint competition, she was only beaten by Arianna Follis . This was the first medal win by a US cross-country skier at the Nordic World Ski Championships .

At the 2010 Olympic Games in Vancouver she was eliminated in the semifinals of the sprint competition and finished eighth. At the sprint competition in Oslo, she won her only podium finish in the 2009/10 season with second place . In the 2010/11 season she won the sprint competitions in Drammen and Liberec. With further podium and top ten placements, she secured third place in the overall sprint world cup. In the overall World Cup, she also achieved the best placement of her career to date with tenth place. At the Nordic World Ski Championships in Oslo in 2011 , she failed in the quarter-finals and took 26th place. The best result of the sprint specialist in Oslo was 18th place over 30 kilometers freestyle (mass start). For the first time she also finished the Tour de Ski , where she reached 21st place. At the beginning of the 2011/12 season , Randall won the fourth World Cup competition of her career in Düsseldorf . At the same place she celebrated her first podium finish in a team sprint together with her partner Sadie Bjornsen . The American duo only had to admit defeat to the team from Norway. A week later, she also won the sprint in Davos . She finished sixth at the Nordic Opening in Kuusamo . In the Tour de Ski 2011/12 , she reached tenth place. She finished second in the sprint stage in Toblach . At the World Cup in Milan , she came in second in the sprint and team sprint. Also in Szklarska Poręba she achieved second place in the sprint and at the end of the season she reached fifth place in the overall World Cup and first place in the Sprint World Cup. In March 2012 she became the US champion over 30 km.

At the beginning of the following season she came in Gällivare with the relay and in the sprint on the third place. At the Nordic Opening in Kuusamo , she finished fifth overall. She achieved second place in the 5 km stage. In the further course of the season she was able to win three sprints and one team sprint and once in the sprint came second. The 2012/13 Tour de Ski finished in 12th place. It won the sprint stage in Val Mustair . At the beginning of the 2013/14 season, she finished fifth at the Nordic Opening in Kuusamo. It came in second place in the sprint stage. In the further course of the season she won three World Cup sprints and once came second. In Lillehammer , she won third place with the relay. Her best results at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi were 18th place in the sprint and seventh place in the team sprint. At the end of the season, she won the Sprint World Cup for the third time in a row. She finished sixth in the overall World Cup.

The following season she finished 58th at the Nordic Opening in Lillehammer . At the Nordic World Ski Championships in Falun in 2015 , she achieved 35th place in the sprint, 31st place in the skiathlon and 15th place over 10 km. In March 2015, she achieved her only podium finish of the season with third place in the sprint in Lahti . In the 2016/17 season she finished in the top ten three times in the World Cup. At the season highlight of the Nordic World Ski Championships 2017 in Lahti, she won the bronze medal in the sprint.
