Ingvild Flugstad Østberg (born November 9, 1990 in Gjøvik ) is a Norwegian cross-country skier .

Career

Østberg started in January 2007 at the Scandinavian Cup races in Sjusjøen for the first time in international competitions. While she only finished 58th in her first race over ten kilometers in the classic technique, she was able to place sixth two days later in the five kilometer freestyle race. In March of the same year she took part in two international FIS races in Hovden , where she was again able to achieve the better result in the free technique. After she finished tenth in a FIS race in Gaalaa , a classic style sprint, in December 2007 , she was in the Norwegian squad for the 2008 Junior World Championship in Males, Italy . After she had finished third in qualifying for the sprint competition there on February 23, she was only eleventh in the competition. Two days later she was able to win the silver medal over five kilometers in classic style. In the mass start race over ten kilometers freestyle, she barely missed a podium as fourth. In the final relay race on February 29, 2008, she won the gold medal together with Celine Brun-Lie , Therese Johaug and Marthe Kristoffersen . After the Junior World Championships, she got the first opportunity to compete in the World Cup in Drammen at the beginning of March . As 31st in the qualification, she narrowly missed participation in the sprint competition. At the end of the season she took part in another FIS race in Røros , in which she had to admit defeat only Brun-Lie as the second.

At the pre-season races in Beitostølen in mid-November 2008 , she was fifth and third, leaving several established runners in the Norwegian World Cup team behind. Two weeks later she got another opportunity to start in the World Cup in Kuusamo . In the sprint competition, she failed again in qualification, but was able to achieve her first World Cup point in the ten-kilometer race in the classic technique as 30th. Then she started in December 2008 and January 2009 in several FIS races and races of the Scandinavian Cup. She was able to win one of the FIS races and three Scandinavian Cups. At the Norwegian championship in Gjøvik in mid-January , she was able to celebrate victory in the double pursuit after she had already finished sixth and fourth in the classic and sprint over ten kilometers. A week later she started at the World Cup in Otepää and was able to place in the top 20 there. At the following Junior World Championships in 2008 in Praz de Lys , she was able to become junior world champion in all four disciplines in which she competed (sprint, double pursuit, five kilometer freestyle and together with Maiken Caspersen Falla , Kristoffersen and Hilde Lauvhaug in the relay). After a two-week break from competition, she entered the 2009 Nordic World Ski Championships in Liberec . In the team sprint, she finished fifth there together with Astrid Jacobsen , and in the 30 kilometer mass start race she was 37th. By the end of the season, she competed in all remaining World Cup races, with varying performances. The 22nd place in the freestyle race over 10 kilometers on March 8, 2009 in Lahti remained her best result, in all races of the World Cup finals she could not achieve the points.

At the beginning of the 2009/10 season, she started after the obligatory pre-season races at the World Cups in Beitostølen and Kuusamo. Although she was always able to collect World Cup points in these races, from mid-December 2009 she only started in FIS races, junior races and in the Scandinavian Cup . She always achieved top positions and was able to win some of the races. Only in mid-January 2010 she started again in the World Cup in Otepää, where she finished 14th over ten kilometers and 29th in the sprint. After another FIS race in Norway, she took part in the 2010 Junior World Championship in Hinterzarten at the end of January . In the four races in which she competed, she was able to win two gold and two silver medals and thus became the most successful athlete in the Junior World Championships. Despite these successes, she was not considered for the Norwegian Olympic squad. Instead, she took part in several races of the Scandinavian Cup during February 2010, where she was successful again and could win several races. This ultimately gave her victory in the overall standings of the cup. In March she took part in the remaining World Cup races of the season, but missed the points in several races. At the end of the season, she successfully took part in several junior races.

In the following season 2010/11, Østberg finished the Tour de Ski 2010/11 on a good 14th place. She also started successfully a little later at the Nordic Junior World Ski Championships in 2011 in Otepää, Estonia . There she won the gold medal in the 15 km pursuit race. In the 2011/12 season she started the season in second place with a good podium in Sjusjøen . A little later, Østberg just barely missed a single podium in Rogla as fourth. She also started successfully at the Tour de Ski 2011/12 and finished in 15th place in the overall Tour ranking. The Norwegian started again successfully in the following season. She landed in the top ten in Québec and Canmore . On January 13, 2013 she celebrated her first World Cup victory in the Liberec team sprint together with Maiken Caspersen Falla . At the following Nordic World Ski Championships in 2013 in Val di Fiemme , she narrowly missed her first World Championship medal as fourth in the team sprint. In the sprint, Østberg did not get beyond 17th place.

Again Østberg celebrated great successes in the 2013/14 season . In December she won a stage of the Tour de Ski in Lenzerheide . In Toblach , too , after winning the qualification, she later came third on the podium in the sprint race. She then traveled to the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi as a medal favorite . After she narrowly missed victory in the sprint and won silver, she secured the gold medal in the team sprint with Marit Bjørgen . At the World Cup finals in Falun , she finished sixth and finished the season in tenth place in the overall World Cup and fourth in the Sprint World Cup.

In the 2014/15 season , Østberg achieved a top ten 10 times and a podium finish five times in 13 World Cup races. She finished fourth at the Nordic Opening in Lillehammer and won the sprint races in Davos and Otepää . In January 2015 she became the Norwegian sprint champion. At the season highlight of the Nordic World Ski Championships 2015 in Falun , she and Maiken Caspersen Falla won the gold medal in the team sprint. She finished the season in fourth place in the overall World Cup and in second place in the Sprint World Cup. In the 2015/16 World Cup season , she took third place in the Distance World Cup and second place in the Sprint World Cup and overall World Cup. She was third at the Nordic Opening in Ruka and at the Ski Tour Canada and second at the Tour de Ski 2016 . Furthermore, she came on the podium 20 times in the World Cup, including four wins, two of which were with the relay. At the Norwegian Championships in 2016 she was second in sprint, over 5 km and in skiathlon and third over 30 km. At the beginning of the 2016/17 season she finished second in the World Cup mini tour in Lillehammer. This was followed by her sixth individual World Cup victory and second place in the sprint in Davos over 15 km freestyle. At the World Cup in La Clusaz , she won the relay and took third place in the 10 km mass start race. At the Tour de Ski 2016/17 she took fourth place in the overall World Cup with five top ten placements. She won the 5 km mass start stage in Val Müstair and came in third in the pursuit stage in Oberstdorf . In January 2017 she won the relay in Ulricehamn and came second in the 15 km mass start race in Falun. At the beginning of February 2017 she finished second over 10 km classic at the Norwegian championships in Lygna . At the season highlight of the Nordic World Ski Championships 2017 in Lahti she came in 22nd place in sprint, 19th place in skiathlon and eighth place over 10 km classic. At the end of the season she took fourth place in the World Cup final in Québec and reached fifth place in the Sprint World Cup, fourth place in the Distance World Cup and third place in the overall World Cup. In April 2017 she won the Skarverennet over 38 km freestyle in Geilo .

At the beginning of the 2017/18 season, Østberg achieved fifth place in the Ruka Triple with 37th place in the sprint, seventh place in the pursuit and third place over 10 km. This was followed by a first place in the 10 km freestyle in Davos and a second place in the pursuit race in Toblach . She finished the 2017/18 Tour de Ski with three stage wins in second place. At the season highlight, the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang , she won the gold medal with the relay. Her best individual result there was fourth place in the 30 km mass start race. At the World Cup finals in Falun , which she finished eighth overall, she ran classically in third place in the 10 km mass start race. Finally she reached the 13th place in the Sprint World Cup, third place in the overall World Cup and second place in the Distance World Cup.

After finishing 26th in the sprint and fourth place over 10 km classic in Ruka at the first World Cup of the 2018/19 season, Østberg achieved third place in the tour standings with second place in the pursuit at the Lillehammer Tour. In Beitostølen she won the relay and took third place over 15 km freestyle and in Davos second place over 10 km freestyle. She won the Tour de Ski 2018/19 with four stage wins and a second place. At the end of January 2019 she triumphed in Ulricehamn with the relay and won third place over 10 km classic at the Norwegian championships in Meråker . At the World Championships in Seefeld in Tyrol , Austria , in February 2019, she was second in the skiathlon, in the 30 km mass start race and over 15 kilometers behind her compatriot Therese Johaug . In the team sprint (together with Maiken Caspersen Falla ) and over ten kilometers in the classic technique, she won the bronze medal. At the end of the season, she finished eighth in the sprint, third in the 10 km mass start race and fifth in the pursuit at the World Cup finals in Québec, third and ultimately won the overall World Cup. As in the previous year, she finished second in the Distance World Cup and 15th in the Sprint World Cup. In the 2019/20 season, she took first, second and third place, and third place in the Tour de Ski 2019/20 and second, third and second place in the 2020 ski tour, each in third place. She won in Lahti with the relay and won third place in the pursuit in Nové Město and second place in the skiathlon in Oberstdorf .
