Natalia Baranova-Masalkina ( Russian Наталья Ивановна Баранова-Масалкина ., Scientific transliteration Natal'ja Ivanovna Baranova-Masalkina * 25. February 1975 in Kriwoschejewo , Mordovia , USSR ) is a Russian cross-country skier .

Career

Natalja Baranova-Massalkina, who had already won gold with the Russian relay at the Junior World Championships in 1993 , started her career in the adult field on January 30, 1994 with participation in the 15 kilometer freestyle competition as part of the Nordic Junior World Ski Championships in 1994 and finished in the end the 12th place. A year later she made her debut on January 14, 1995 in Nové Město over the 15 kilometers classic in the World Cup and came in 12th place in this race.

In 1995 Baranowa-Massalkina took part in the Nordic Junior World Ski Championships in 1995 in Gällivare . At this Junior World Championships she won the gold medal over the classic five kilometers and with the Russian relay and the bronze medal over the 15 kilometers freestyle.

During a WADA inspection before the competitions of the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City , Baranova-Massalkina tested positive for EPO . After the positive doping result was established, she was expelled from the Olympic village and subsequently banned by the FIS for two years.

Her best result of the season reached Baranova-Massalkina in the 2004/05 season . After she achieved two third places in the season, she finished ninth in the overall World Cup ranking and fifth in the distance ranking at the end of the season. At the Nordic World Ski Championships in 2005 in Oberstdorf , Baranova-Massalkina won silver in the 4 × 5 kilometer competition of the relay with Larissa Kurkina , Julija Tschepalowa and Evgenija Medvedeva . She also won the bronze medal over the 30 kilometers in the women's singles. At the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin , she won the gold medal in the relay competition in the same line-up as in 2005 and became Olympic champion. She also started in the women's individual competition over ten kilometers, but came here only in 16th place. After the 2005/06 season Baranova-Massalkina ended her career.

Baranova-Massalkina currently lives in Tomsk Oblast . She is married and has two daughters.
